Television host Kelly Ripa and husband Mark Consuelos shared their heartbreak on “Live with Kelly and Mark” as they announced the passing of their beloved Shih Tzu, Chewie, who spent 17 years as part of their family.
The emotional revelation came during a recent episode, where Consuelos disclosed they had made the difficult choice to say goodbye to Chewie through at-home euthanasia after her health deteriorated significantly and she stopped eating.
“Yesterday was tough for us. We had to say goodbye to Chewie,” Consuelos shared with viewers, noting that a veterinarian visited their New York City residence for the procedure.
Chewie’s story with the family began during a memorable adoption segment on Live, making her connection to the show particularly special. “This show brought us Chewie,” Consuelos reminisced, adding that she had been present throughout their children’s lives.
The dog became an integral part of not just the Ripa-Consuelos household—which includes children Michael, Lola, and Joaquin—but of their entire neighborhood. “She became everyone’s dog,” Ripa shared, noting that even their mail carrier came to pay respects.
In a poignant moment, Ripa revealed a special farewell: “She never allowed face kisses her whole life. After she passed, I finally got to kiss her nose—something she’d never permitted before.”

The couple, who also have another dog named Lena, a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix they adopted in 2020, supported each other through the emotional broadcast. “We’ll get through this together,” Consuelos assured his tearful wife.
