Midway Airport, known for its busy terminals and hurried travelers, recently became the setting for an emotional reunion that left bystanders in awe. Former Marine Sgt. Jacob Varela stood anxiously at the terminal, waiting for the moment he had been dreaming of for years. After three long years apart, he was about to be reunited with Atilla, his loyal K9 service dog who had been his steadfast companion during military service. A Bond Formed Through Service
Sgt. Varela first met Atilla in 2014 when they were paired together at Lackland Air Force Base. From that moment, their lives became intertwined. Atilla, a combat tracker, played a crucial role in detecting threats and ensuring the safety of his unit. Their work required not only skill but an extraordinary level of trust.
“We were together for everything,” Sgt. Varela recalled in an interview with CBS. “Everywhere I went, he was with me. If I was drinking water, he was drinking water. If I was eating, he was eating.”
For three years, the duo endured intense training, unpredictable environments, and rigorous military demands. But in 2017, their path diverged—Sgt. Varela transitioned out of the Marines while Atilla continued his service. Despite the separation, Varela never forgot his beloved partner.
The Long-Awaited Reunion
When Sgt. Varela learned that Atilla was retiring, he knew he wanted him back. With the help of Mission K-9 Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reuniting handlers with their military K9 partners, he set in motion the plans for Atilla’s return.
Kristen Maurer, president of Mission K-9 Rescue, explained, “These dogs serve alongside their handlers, training with them 24/7 and risking their lives together. The bond they form is something we can’t fully comprehend.”
Finally, on the long-awaited day, Varela stood in Midway Airport with his heart pounding. As soon as Atilla spotted him, his tail began wagging furiously. Without hesitation, the devoted dog bolted into his handler’s arms, eagerly licking his face in complete joy. The moment was nothing short of magical, rekindling the deep connection they had shared years before.
Adjusting to Civilian Life
Now retired, Atilla can finally enjoy life in peace, surrounded by the one person who understands him best. For Sgt. Varela, the reunion was about more than just bringing an old friend home—it was about honoring a companion who had stood by his side in the most difficult moments.
“The way he reacted, the way he jumped—he knows who I am. That’s good,” Varela said with relief.
Atilla is now adjusting to a life filled with love, relaxation, and freedom from military responsibilities.

Sgt. Varela and Atilla’s story is not unique. Another Marine, Sgt. Angela Cardone, experienced a similar emotional reunion with her K9 partner, Bogi. She and Bogi had worked together during her assignment in Japan, but her transfer to Hawaii separated them.
When Bogi was retired due to a neck injury, Cardone was determined to bring him home. With the assistance of American Humane, she was able to adopt Bogi and give him a forever home. Their reunion in Hawaii was filled with joy, underscoring the deep emotional connection that military handlers share with their service dogs.

The stories of Sgt. Varela and Sgt. Cardone serve as a reminder of the loyalty and devotion shared between military service members and their K9 companions. These dogs are more than working animals—they are family.
