Jogger Rescues Abandoned Guinea Pigs During Morning Run in Park
When Brigette Brouillard set out for her morning run in Cherokee Park, Louisville, Kentucky, she was looking for a peaceful escape. As the Executive Director of Second Chances Wildlife Center, her days are filled with rescuing and rehabilitating animals. Running through the scenic trails provided a rare opportunity to disconnect and recharge. But fate had another plan that morning.
As she neared the three-mile mark, an unusual sight caught her attention—a large cardboard box resting near the trail. Initially, she hesitated. This was her time to unwind. But curiosity and her well-honed instincts urged her to take a closer look.
Inside the box were six tiny creatures, some covered in soft fur and others completely hairless. The realization hit her—they were guinea pigs.
An Urgent Rescue Mission
The tiny animals looked frightened and helpless. Some had fur, while others—known as Skinny pigs—were entirely hairless and especially vulnerable to the elements. Immediately, Brigette knew they couldn’t survive in the wild. Guinea pigs are domesticated pets; left in the park, they would likely starve or become prey to other animals.
Without hesitation, she picked up the box and started making her way back. The journey was difficult—carrying six guinea pigs over uneven terrain for three miles proved more challenging than she expected. Fortunately, another parkgoer saw her struggling and offered to help transport the guinea pigs to her vehicle.
A New Lease on Life
Once home, Brigette wasted no time. She set up a clean, safe enclosure with fresh food and water. Slowly, the guinea pigs began to relax, nibbling on their food and adjusting to their new surroundings.
Next, she took to social media to share their story. The response was overwhelming—dozens of kindhearted individuals stepped forward, eager to adopt them. Within days, all six guinea pigs found loving homes, ensuring they would never face such abandonment again.
A Reminder of Responsibility
Brigette’s unexpected encounter serves as an important reminder:
Reflecting on the experience, Brigette couldn’t help but smile. “I went out to find peace, and instead, I found animals in need,” she said. “But maybe that’s just my purpose.”
