Mia was saved alongside her mother when she was merely 9 days old. The duo were brought to the RSPCA and provided with much needed affection and attention. Puppies and young dogs typically are highly sought after and find homes quickly โ€” but for some unknown reason, this wasn’t Mia’s experience.

Weeks, months and years went by without anyone coming to adopt Mia. She observed 1,500 other creatures find homes from the RSPCA’s Southridge Animal Center before her, all while awaiting her chance. She had lived her entire existence at the shelter, and nobody could comprehend why.

“Her extended wait was utterly heartbreaking,” Claire Hoffman, behavior and welfare advisor at RSPCA Southridge, told The Dodo. “We believe she was the RSPCA’s longest ‘available for rehoming’ pet and the nation’s least wanted dog, a title no creature deserves.”

In October, Mia celebrated her fifth birthday at the shelter. Her companions there organized a celebration and made her feel as cherished and adored as possible. As they celebrated, everyone who knew and cared for Mia shared the same wish โ€” that this would be her final birthday at the shelter.

And several months later, that wish eventually became reality.

200 miles away, Mia’s father had been waiting for her, and he finally discovered her. She’s been in her new residence for about a month now, and to say that she’s flourishing would be an understatement.

“She enjoys making new companions, both canine and human, and you can see the joy in her when we venture out for walks or engage with toys together,” Chris Greenwell, Mia’s father, told The Dodo. “I’m so delighted I’ve been able to provide her with a joyful life and a caring home โ€” I have no idea why such a remarkable dog was in care for so long, but the way she’s adjusted to home life is incredible.”

Now, Mia is catching up on lost time and experiencing all the activities she missed while residing at the shelter. She has both a preferred sofa and a favorite armchair. She embarks on treks and has uncovered what rivers and waterfalls are. She disrupts her father during work meetings and has already demolished several toys. She’s truly living her best existence, and her father couldn’t be more pleased with how she’s transformed his life.

“Everyone she encounters, she wins over โ€” even individuals who aren’t ‘dog people,'” Greenwell said. “She’s surpassed expectations in every way. Mia truly embodies man’s best friend.”
