ST. LOUIS (WKRC/CNN Newsource) – Rescuers discovered a canine with a projectile lodged in his neck and a gunshot wound to his abdomen that they suspect came from hunters trying to end his life.

According to a social media statement from Stray Rescue of St. Louis on Facebook, the 1-year-old puppy was delivered to the rescue facility by an unidentified individual who the organization did not believe was connected to the animal’s injuries.

The shelter said the canine, whom they named Lucky Charm, had a projectile piercing through his neck and esophagus nearly touching his spine, and a bullet embedded in his stomach.

“Someone was pursuing this puppy,” the statement said. “They wanted him gone.”

The post said staff immediately administered pain relief to Lucky Charm and prepared him for the complex surgical procedure he would need to undergo to extract the projectile and bullet.

Lucky Charm needed transportation to a “skilled specialist” to perform the delicate operation, but on March 18, one day after the puppy was discovered, the shelter returned to Facebook to announce the procedure was successful.

“Here’s the really positive news – they reported he is doing well and enthusiastically consumed his breakfast!” the update read. “Although he’s not completely recovered yet and today remains critical, they believe we’ll be able to bring him back in the next day or two.”

The prediction proved accurate, as they shared one final update on March 19 revealing that Lucky Charm had returned to the shelter following a successful surgical procedure.

You can learn more about Lucky Charm and his story on the shelter’s website.
