A Unique Bond Begins on the Streets of Toronto

Many pet owners believe that their furry companions chose them rather than the other way around. In the case of Julia Hatherell and her orange-and-white cat, Liam, this sentiment rings truer than ever.

Several years ago, Hatherell began noticing a sociable stray cat frequenting her Toronto neighborhood. No matter where she went, this feline managed to find her. He’d confidently stroll up, flop onto the ground, and roll over in anticipation of belly rubs.

A Determined Visitor at the Window

One day, the cat’s persistence escalated. He became more than just a familiar neighborhood face — he wanted to become part of Hatherell’s life permanently. To prove his intent, he scaled her window screen, clinging with his claws and meowing as if to say, “Let me in.”

His visits became a daily occurrence. No matter what, he returned with unwavering dedication. “He’d just be trying to get our attention and never really leave,” Hatherell recalled.

From Stray to Family

Eventually, curiosity and compassion overtook caution. Hatherell decided to let the affectionate feline inside “just for one night.” Unsure if he belonged to someone, she asked around the neighborhood, hoping to find his original home. But as fate would have it, he was a true stray — and he had chosen her.

She named him Liam, officially welcoming him into her life. “As soon as he got back from the vet and was on the bed, it was constant cuddles,” Hatherell said. Liam settled instantly into his indoor cat lifestyle and proved himself to be a cuddle champion.

Liam, the Unexpected Foster Dad

Inspired by her experience with Liam, Hatherell made the decision to foster kittens in need. To her surprise, Liam embraced his new role as the house’s gentle protector and playmate. The kittens adored him instantly, often curling up next to him for snuggles or following him around the house like tiny shadows.

“I did not expect this stray cat, who would hang onto our screen, to be just the perfect little foster dad,” Hatherell said proudly.

To date, Liam has helped care for dozens of foster kittens. He plays with them, comforts them when they’re scared, and teaches them the ropes of indoor living.

Chosen by Liam

Despite his new role as a mentor to foster kittens, Liam hasn’t changed much. He remains as affectionate and clingy as ever. Whether he’s snoozing on Hatherell’s lap or nudging her hand for pets, he constantly reminds her of the special bond they share.

“It just makes you realize that he’s meant to be here, he’s meant to be my cat,” Hatherell said with gratitude. “I feel very honored to be chosen by Liam.”
