Spinach, a puppy with a heart full of love, arrived at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) under dire circumstances. Found with a ruptured eye, his survival was uncertain without medical care. The shelter stepped in for life-saving surgery to remove the damaged eye, and immediately after, Spinach’s resilient spirit began to shine through. His recovery brought back his youthful energy, and he greeted the world with a big, hopeful smile.

Everyone believed it wouldn’t be long before he found a forever family. But as the days turned into months, and the months into over a year, Spinach remained in the shelter—waiting. What started with optimism slowly faded into sadness with each of the 432 days that passed by inside a kennel.

Despite the unwavering love from APA! volunteers and staff, it became clear that long-term shelter life was taking a toll. Volunteer Frankie Helfey recalled the early days: “When he was in the playgroup, he was happy and joyful because he loved to play with other dogs,” she said. “But seeing him back in his kennel was heartbreaking—you could tell how sad he was.”

The emotional toll soon grew physical. The once vibrant puppy began losing weight and his interest in food diminished. The staff tried everything to bring back his spark.

  • Weekly meal changes to entice him to eat
  • 2-4 bowls of various foods daily just to see what he preferred
  • Constant enrichment and playtime to stimulate his mental health

As summer heat bore down, concern grew not just for Spinach’s heart, but his physical safety. Temperatures were soaring, and the shelter worked to provide cooling devices and shade—desperate to keep dogs like Spinach safe through the intense Texas heat.

@austinpetsalive Spinach was in a kennel all last summer – just a puppy back then. Today, as temps hit triple digits, he’s still in that kennel, once again exposed to the dangerous heat.

The APA! team knew something had to give. They turned to social media once again—a heartfelt plea for Spinach’s adoption. His story caught the attention of a compassionate family in Oklahoma who instantly fell in love with his sweet, soulful eyes and difficult journey.

After 432 days of waiting, Spinach finally left the shelter behind. He embarked on a road trip not just across states, but into his new chapter—a home where he would be loved, nurtured and never forgotten.

Spinach in his new home

Now, Spinach is flourishing. In his new home, surrounded by warmth and companionship, his tail wags with joy again. The smile he came into the shelter with has returned—this time, stronger than ever. His resilience, the devotion of shelter workers, and the love of a new family culminated into a beautiful ending for a dog who deserved nothing less.

As Helfey expressed through joyful tears, “I’m going to miss his face. When you volunteer at a shelter and build these bonds, you know you’ll miss them. But you never want to see them back at the shelter.” For Spinach, that goodbye marks the beginning of everything he’s ever wanted—home.
