Brave cat defends family dog from coyotes

The phrase “fighting like cats and dogs” might lead some to believe that felines and canines are natural-born enemies, but one heartwarming story from Edmond, Oklahoma, proves just how deep the bond between household pets can truly run. When a small family dog was attacked in its backyard by not one, but two coyotes, it was the family’s cat who raced to the rescue.

Lane Dyer lives with two companion animals he adores: Oakley, a six-year-old white Havanese, and Binx, a sleek black cat adopted as a stray kitten. While the two pets have contrasting personalities, Lane shared that despite being “polar opposites,” they’ve always shared a strong bond that resembles sibling love. That powerful connection was tested—and powerfully proven—on the night of November 30.

That evening, Oakley was let outside to relieve herself in the backyard. It was an ordinary routine—until danger leapt from nearby bushes in the form of a wild coyote. The predator lunged at Oakley, overpowering the small dog within moments. Things turned even more harrowing when a second coyote appeared, joining in the attack, and trapping Oakley in what could have been a fatal situation.

But what happened next was nothing short of astonishing. Binx, the family’s cat, came charging into the yard and fearlessly confronted the wild coyotes. Her sudden and aggressive approach startled the wild animals just enough to make them retreat and flee the property, ultimately saving Oakley’s life.

Brave cat Binx, hero of the story

Sadly, Oakley was badly wounded in the ordeal. Lane described the injuries as severe, with Oakley “gushing blood” from her chest and side. The Dyers rushed their beloved pup to a veterinary emergency clinic. Initially, veterinarians feared they might need to amputate one of Oakley’s legs. Thankfully, after intensive treatment and care, her limb was preserved and she began recovering.

The following day, the Dyers reviewed footage from their security cameras to better understand what had transpired in their yard. What they found left them in disbelief—Binx, their seemingly quiet and mild-mannered cat, had sprung into action and dared to take on two predators—twice her size.

Lane Dyer described witnessing the footage as “the craziest thing ever.” He expressed deep admiration for Binx’s bravery, saying, “It was inspiring to see just our little outdoor cat jump at two coyotes that were attacking this little dog who she loves and run them off.”

Oakley is now on the mend, surrounded by the warmth of her family and the heroic cat who risked everything to protect her. This remarkable story is a powerful reminder of the unexpected bravery that our animal companions can show in moments of crisis and the unbreakable bonds they form with one another.

The entire incident, including Binx’s courageous charge, was captured on home security video. You can view the footage below:

In a world where cats are often thought of as aloof or independent, Binx’s actions turn that stereotype on its head. She proved that love and loyalty can come in small, furry packages—and sometimes, the smallest among us are the mightiest heroes of all.
