In a story that transcends time and distance, a 16-year-old dog named Nugget has finally returned home after being missing for seven long years. The emotional reunion between Nugget and his owner, Jessie Springer, took place nearly 1,700 miles from their home in Farmington, New Mexico, highlighting the powerful connection between pets and their families — and the life-changing role of microchipping.

Nugget the dog reunited with owner after 7 years

Back in 2015, Nugget was a 9-year-old loyal companion who had always stayed near Jessie. One day, he vanished without a trace. Despite her exhaustive efforts — searching neighborhoods, distributing flyers, and reaching out to shelters — Jessie found no signs of Nugget’s whereabouts.

I truly believed he had walked off to die,” Jessie later told local news outlet WYFF4. “He was already an old dog, and he had always stayed close. The idea that he was gone without a sound was just heartbreaking.”

Years passed, and although Jessie eventually had to accept that Nugget might never return, she never fully lost hope. That hope was unexpectedly rekindled in 2023 by a text message that read: “I think I found your dog.”

Veterinary clinic identifies lost dog Nugget

The text came from Jennifer, a resident of Travelers Rest, South Carolina. One rainy evening, she spotted a small, limping dog seeking shelter on her porch. Concerned for his wellbeing, she brought him to an emergency veterinary clinic. There, the staff scanned the dog for a microchip — a step that proved pivotal. The microchip scan revealed the dog’s name was Nugget and linked him back to his original owner, Jessie Springer in New Mexico.

Stunned yet hopeful, Jessie confirmed the details. Against all odds, the long-lost Nugget had been found.

The question remains: how did Nugget make such a remarkable cross-country journey? Angela Gschwind of Carolina Loving Hounds Rescue (CLHR), the organization that helped with the reunion, speculates that someone may have picked Nugget up while passing through New Mexico and brought him east, unaware that he had a microchip.

We often reunite pets that have been missing a week or a month — but seven years and 1,700 miles is nearly unheard of,” says Angela.

Jennifer’s act of kindness didn’t end with rescuing Nugget. Once the microchip linked him to Jessie, Carolina Loving Hounds Rescue offered to coordinate and fund Jessie’s journey to South Carolina for the reunion. Thanks to their support, she boarded a plane for the reunion she had only dreamt of.

When Jessie arrived at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, she was met with a flood of emotion. Alongside rescue team members and Jennifer, there stood Nugget — older, greyer, and a little slower, but unmistakably her dog.

Their emotional reunion brought those present to tears. Jessie knelt down and embraced Nugget, overwhelmed with joy. Though initially cautious, Nugget slowly began to recognize Jessie’s scent and touch — unmistakable signs that home had found him again.

Now back in Farmington, Nugget is spending his golden years surrounded by warmth, comfort, and the woman who never gave up on him. His journey — full of mystery and miracle — is a poignant reminder of the enduring relationship between people and their pets. It also underscores the importance of microchipping, a small step that saved a dog’s life and brought him home.
