In the quiet town of Hancock, Michigan, a beloved four-legged hero named Presley is taking on a new challenge that no amount of training could have prepared him for—fighting cancer. For years, Presley has been a devoted search and rescue dog with the Superior Search and Rescue team. Now, the community that he’s helped protect and comfort is coming together to support him in return.
Presley’s journey from rescuer to fighter has been marked by commitment, love, and resilience. As a Newfoundland nearing his eighth birthday, Presley spent most of his life bringing hope to those in crisis and spreading joy at local events. Whether climbing rough terrain during search missions or gently comforting children with disabilities, Presley made deep impressions on everyone he encountered.
That journey changed in March when Presley was diagnosed with a severe form of bone cancer. His owner, Amber Kraft, remembers the moment clearly:
“We felt a large lump,” said Kraft. “And very quickly, our local vet was able to get him in and diagnosed. Then we met with an oncologist in Duluth, who formulated an action plan. From there, we traveled to Madison for surgery. All three vets have worked together to make this treatment as efficient as possible.”
Thanks to coordinated medical efforts, Presley underwent surgery to remove the affected limb and stabilize his condition. But his road to recovery requires more treatments, including chemotherapy—calling for greater emotional and financial support.
The fight isn’t over. Now that Presley is home and healing, his supporters and loving community are making sure he has everything he needs to recover fully.
To help Presley, the following efforts are underway:
- Goal of raising $2,500 to assist with continued treatment
- Special summer fundraiser organized by Paavo’s Pack Walks
- Birthday celebration for Presley at the Hancock Dog Park
The community is rallying behind Presley with warmth and generosity. Paavo’s Pack Walks, a local pet-loving group, is leading efforts to make Presley’s birthday celebration more than just a party. The festive gathering will include puppy races, themed gift baskets, and an outpouring of love for a dog who dedicated so many years to uplifting others.
“Every other event I’ve been to, everybody is willing to help each other,” Kraft said. “So it would be wonderful to see people support Presley.”
Event Details:
- Date: June 14
- Time: 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

All proceeds from the event will support Presley’s continued treatment, ensuring he gets the chance to enjoy many more tail-wagging years with his family and community.
Those unable to attend in person aren’t left out. Donations are being accepted online via Presley’s dedicated GoFundMe page, where neighbors and admirers from near and far can contribute to this brave pup’s healing journey.
Presley may no longer be out in the field, but the courage he displayed as a rescue dog lives on in his battle against illness. And thanks to the power of community, he won’t face this challenge alone.
