What began as a peaceful morning walk during a family vacation in Muskoka, Ontario, turned into an unforgettable, life-changing rescue for Fiona Begg. Earlier this year, she found herself in the right place at the right time—saving a life that seemed destined to slip away.
A Serene Walk Turned Sudden Rescue
While enjoying the stillness of the early morning, Begg noticed a gray cat on the side of the road. The two locked eyes, and something about him tugged at her heart. Seconds later, the quiet morning was shattered by a sudden, heart-wrenching sound—the cat had been hit by a large truck.
“It was one of the most heartbreaking and traumatic sights I’ve ever seen,” Fiona told The Dodo. The cat lay in the middle of the road, injured and vulnerable, with cars whizzing past him. Without hesitation, Begg stopped traffic and rushed to the cat’s side.
Holding On for Life—and Love
“At that point, I didn’t even know if he was alive, but I couldn’t let him be hit again or left alone in that pain,” Begg said. Clutching the fragile cat to her chest, she raced against time. Despite his wounds, the cat—now clinging to Begg’s shoulder—seemed to recognize he was in caring hands.
“He held on like he was holding on for dear life,” she recalled. “That moment will never leave me. All I could think was, ‘If these are his last moments, he won’t spend them alone.’”
A Dash to the Vet
With urgency, Begg carried the cat to the closest veterinary clinic. Along the way, the bond between them deepened—he cried, bled, and dug his claws into her shoulder, refusing to let go.
“They had to pry him off of me when I handed him over,” she said. The vet team immediately began treatment but warned the situation was critical, and recovery uncertain. Fiona left in tears, fearing she’d already said goodbye to the brave feline she’d just met.
A Miracle Recovery
Four days later, Fiona received an unexpected call—the cat had survived. “It felt like nothing short of a miracle,” she said. Not only had he pulled through, but he now needed a home. Without hesitation, Fiona returned to the clinic and adopted him, giving him the name Lucky Chance.
Building a New Life Together
Though Fiona had always considered herself a dog person, something about Lucky Chance felt different. She knew he was meant to be part of their family. Since joining Fiona and her dog, Link, Lucky Chance has flourished—defying all odds with his spirit and love of life.

Now fully recovered, Lucky Chance is an inseparable part of Fiona’s adventures. Whether hiking through forests, exploring trails, or simply relaxing at home, Fiona, Lucky Chance, and Link are a trio joined by fate and bonded by love.
The Adventure Continues
Fiona often shares their inspiring outdoor moments together, showing Lucky Chance happily exploring nature alongside his best friends. He might have been an unexpected part of their vacation, but now he’s the heart of their home.
“The best things in life come unexpected,” Fiona wrote in a heartfelt Instagram caption. “So blessed with this sweet boy.”
