Most brides dream of a big white wedding, but for Cat Kukla, the dream was different—and furrier. Her wedding to longtime partner Jimmy wasn’t held in a chapel or beneath a flowered arch. Instead, the couple exchanged their vows amid the buzz of veterinary machines and caring hands of medical staff, all so their cherished dog, Bear, could witness one of the most important days of their lives.
Bear, a 17-year-old pup who had been at Cat’s side since childhood, was more than a pet—he was family. In fact, Cat had always imagined Bear being a part of her wedding day, not just as a guest but in a starring role. “I never pictured a wedding gown or a big reception,” she told The Dodo. “But I always saw Bear there with me, rolling down the aisle in a little red wagon.”
When Cat met Jimmy in 2011, Bear quickly became a beloved part of their shared life. And as wedding plans began to take shape, neither Cat nor Jimmy ever imagined saying “I do” without their loyal four-legged friend in attendance. However, as the big day neared, Bear was suddenly hospitalized due to worsening kidney disease, a heartbreaking turn of events for the couple.
Faced with the heart-wrenching reality that Bear might not live long enough to make it to their ceremony, Cat proposed a new plan. Why not move the wedding to wherever Bear was? Jimmy didn’t hesitate. “I’d marry you any day, any time,” he replied.
The couple decided to wed at the VCA Veterinary Emergency Service & Veterinary Specialty Center, where Bear was receiving treatment. With close family gathered around and veterinary staff offering both medical and moral support, Cat and Jimmy made it official in the one place Bear could attend.
Bear was present just as Cat had envisioned—cozily resting in that little red wagon with a sign on the back that read: “I loved her first.” The moment was full of emotion, laughter, and tears. Despite the sterile environment of the clinic, love filled the room, glowing brighter than any chandelier ever could.
A loving tribute to Bear was permanently inked on Cat’s arm—“You’ll be with me wherever I go”—accompanied by a tiny paw print. It symbolized their eternal bond and reminded her that Bear would be part of every step she took, well beyond their wedding day.
Miraculously, just two days after the ceremony at the vet clinic, Bear was well enough to return home. He was strong enough to attend their originally planned wedding celebration, this time joined by the couple’s other dogs. In another touching surprise, Bear even managed to stand and walk outdoors—a feat he hadn’t been able to do in days.
Though Bear’s health continues to be fragile, Cat and Jimmy are eternally grateful for the gift of his presence on their most important day. Their unusual wedding reminds us all that sometimes the most beautiful moments come not from perfection, but from love’s willingness to adapt.

Sometimes love means shifting expectations—and sometimes it means turning a sterile vet clinic into the most meaningful wedding venue imaginable. For Cat and Jimmy, having Bear by their side was worth every ounce of adjustment. And for Bear, he got to see his human through another chapter of life, the way he always had—present, loyal, and deeply loved.
