Woman Rescues Kitten Trapped in Car Engine During Lunch Break

What started as a normal lunch break for Heather Silvis quickly turned into an unforgettable rescue mission when she heard mysterious cries coming from what she initially thought was her car stereo.

From Beats to Meows: A Strange Sound in the Car

Heather Silvis was sitting in her car during her lunch break, unwinding to some music when she started to hear faint, high-pitched sounds. At first, she didn’t think anything of it.

“I initially thought that the meows were part of a remix of a song,” Silvis told The Dodo. “In my head, I was thinking, ‘This is a weird remix, but I can deal with it.’ Which is absolutely absurd now that I think about it.”

A Feline Surprise Under the Hood

The strange noises didn’t go away, and Silvis quickly realized that they weren’t coming from her speakers but from somewhere inside her car. She began searching around the parking lot, then looked under the car, only to discover that the cries were actually coming from inside the engine compartment.

Unsure of how to proceed, and concerned for what she might find, Silvis called her boss, who came down to help pop the hood. What they found was both heartbreaking and heartwarming — a tiny, terrified kitten wedged inside the engine bay.

“He was basically doing parkour all over my engine,” said Silvis. “He got scared and jumped to the ground, but then jumped back up in it and was running around.”

Operation Rescue: Saving the Engine Stowaway

The kitten, later named Tater Tot, was elusive and clearly very frightened. After some time and patience, Silvis and her boss managed to safely secure the kitten. The little stowaway, with no idea how he had ended up trapped inside the car, finally began to calm down once he realized he was safe.

Making Room for One More at Home

Though her husband is allergic to cats, Silvis couldn’t bear to leave the little one behind. She made a quick call to her husband to seek forgiveness instead of permission and decided to take Tater Tot home. Carefully keeping him separated from their other pets, she set up a temporary space for the kitten before heading back to work.

“No one was sure exactly how the kitten had ended up inside the car, but it wasn’t really important. He had a home, and that was all that mattered.”

Tater Tot Finds His Forever Family

Tater Tot has since become an official member of the Silvis household, and he has turned into a healthy, energetic kitten full of personality. Despite a bumpy start, he’s now enjoying a joyful, mischievous life.

He loves to terrorize the family’s older cat, who is less impressed by his enthusiasm.
He bravely “bullies” the family’s 115-pound Akita.
He shamelessly uses jeans as his personal scratching posts.

“He spends his days terrorizing our 10-year-old grumpy cat, bullying our 115-pound Akita, and using jeans as a scratching post,” Silvis shared, laughing.
