Officers Move 1,000 Pounds of Ice to Rescue Trapped Kitten
In the early morning hours of a quiet September day in Aurora, Illinois, a mysterious sound pierced the stillness near a local gas station. It was 3 a.m. when a concerned patron, puzzled by strange cries echoing from behind an outdoor ice machine, decided to take action and contacted the Aurora Police Department. What followed was a heartwarming and heroic rescue mission that melted hearts — much like the ice that had to be moved during the operation.
The Startling Discovery
Upon arrival, officers began surveying the area to trace the faint but desperate meows. It didn’t take long before they pinpointed the source: a tiny kitten, no more than a few months old, was somehow trapped behind the store’s industrial ice machine. His plaintive cries alerted just the right set of ears, and help was finally on the way.
A Chilly Rescue Mission
The officers quickly assessed the situation and realized rescue wouldn’t be simple. The only way to reach the kitten was to move the massive ice machine away from the wall. But before that could be done, they had to clear out the large volume of ice stored inside — more than 1,000 pounds of it.
With urgency and compassion guiding their actions, the officers began the chilly task of unloading the ice — bare-handed, under moonlight, right onto the pavement.
“It went quicker than we thought it would,” a police department representative shared with The Dodo, acknowledging the efficiency and teamwork it took to carry out the impromptu operation.
Mission Accomplished: Kitten Recovered
After clearing the ice, the officers used a dolly to gently nudge the metal machine just far enough to create a narrow opening. What astonished everyone was the kitten’s reaction — or rather, his lack of one.
“Surprisingly, the cat stayed right there and didn’t try to run away,” the representative continued. “I reached in and was able to pull him right out. I was certainly glad he was okay!”
A Warm Shelter and a Fresh Start
Once free, the kitten was gently placed into a carrier and transported to Aurora Animal Care & Control. There, rescuers named the brave little feline “Cadence.” The shelter staff wasted no time in giving him necessary medical care, vaccinations, and a safe place to rest and recover.
Cadence, despite his frigid ordeal, quickly began to bounce back under the care of his new human friends. While he’s not yet adopted, staff are optimistic that a loving home is just around the corner for this incredibly lucky kitten.

The Aurora Police Department, in an unusual but deeply touching display of compassion, transformed a simple early-morning call into a lifesaving moment. Thanks to their quick thinking and chilly fingertips, Cadence now has a second chance at life — warmer, safer, and hopefully wrapped tightly in the arms of a loving new family very soon.
