Her name is Olive, and she boasts a breathtaking, rare condition known as sectoral heterochromia iridum—a feature that gives her eyes a stunning mixture of colors in a single iris. A pure white coat paired with this rare ocular phenomenon has transformed Olive into a feline sensation, amassing a significant following on Instagram.
Affectionately nicknamed “Odd-Eyed Olive”, this charming cat first entered the public eye in 2017 when her owner, Kim, began sharing pictures of her online. What started as casual photo sharing blossomed into a viral presence, with Olive drawing admiration from more than 18,000 followers, enchanted by the feline’s unique appearance and soft expression.
Sectoral heterochromia refers to a condition where part of one iris is a different color than the rest. In Olive’s case, each eye appears to hold pools of soft blue, amber, and golden orange, creating a dreamy and otherworldly gaze. While this condition is exceptionally rare, it’s found more frequently in white cats due to the genetic links between coat and eye color.
When Kim first brought Olive home after finding her on a pet-sale platform, the kitten’s eye condition hadn’t yet developed to its striking final form. Kim recalls the moment vividly:
“It was quite dark when I picked her up. The lady briefly lifted her into the light and mentioned that her eyes might turn out to look a bit odd. At that point, I had no idea how they’d turn out.”
In her new home, Olive quickly adapted to the company of three other cats. Although getting a perfect group photo of all four is nearly impossible—as any multi-cat household knows—each cat has carved out their own unique place. Olive appears to bond most with Charlie, a fellow rescue, while she simply tolerates the presence of the other cats, including one named Fifi, who she coexists with but doesn’t hold in the same esteem.
Despite the genetic nature of her condition, which in some animals can be linked to health concerns like hearing or vision loss, Olive seems blissfully unaffected. Her eyes may be colorful mosaics, but her hearing is sharp, and she’s known to spring into action when there’s movement or sound that catches her attention. Olive enjoys a largely indoor lifestyle with some supervised adventures into the backyard garden where she explores the leafy green corners of her English home.
