Imagine soaring through the skies, wind rushing past the cockpit, blue above and below—pure tranquility. But that peaceful flight turned heart-stopping when a pilot discovered an unexpected and wide-eyed passenger: a cat clinging to the wing of his aircraft mid-air.
This airborne twist took place in Kourou, French Guiana. Romain Jantot, an experienced ultralight pilot, took off from a local air club, oblivious to the daring feline hiding beneath the wing of his small two-seater plane.
According to Jantot, the flight began normally. Engines hummed and wheels lifted into the air, giving no indication of what was about to unfold. But within seconds of being airborne, something caught the pilot’s eye—a furry face peeking from under the wing strut.
This wasn’t a prank or flight simulation gone rogue. It was very real. About 38 seconds into the onboard video, a cat emerges, its tiny claws gripping the wing for dear life. At first, viewers might mistake it for a bag or fabric flapping in the wind. But moments later, the feline’s form becomes unmistakably clear.
With the calm you’d expect from an aviation professional, Jantot quickly switches focus. While still mid-flight, he identifies the cat’s positions and begins a careful descent. There was no time to delay, no option for radio chatter—there was a life on the wing, freezing and terrified.
- Pilot: Romain Jantot
- Location: Kourou Flying Club, French Guiana
- Aircraft Type: Ultralight sports plane
- Unexpected Passenger: Club Cat (now mascot)
After a short and swift descent, the plane touches down safely. The pilot wastes no time unbuckling and leaping from the cockpit to retrieve the brave stowaway. The cat, seemingly shaken but unharmed, is gently lifted from her perch. While it’s still unclear how exactly she ended up perched on the wing, what’s certain is the cat’s resilience and the pilot’s quick reaction likely saved her life.
Jantot later commented, “I still don’t know if it got in after the pre-flight check or if I missed it.” Either way, the feline’s unexpected joyride turned viral. The video uploaded to YouTube quickly racked up over 41 million views, stunning viewers with its mix of humor, disbelief, and admiration for both cat and pilot.

Back on solid ground, the cat has since earned celebrity status at the flying club, reportedly becoming their unofficial—but much loved—mascot. Though she seems to have retired from aerial stunts, her single flight is now the stuff of internet legend.
This astonishing event reminds us that sometimes, even our most carefully planned journeys can come with surprising companions. For pilots everywhere, it may spark a new addition to the pre-flight checklist: “Check for cats on the wing.”
