Brave Mama Cat Stays With Kittens Trapped in Plastic Box
A Heartbreaking Discovery on a Patch of Grass
In a quiet nook of Memphis, Tennessee, a scene of heartbreak and heroism unfolded. On a small patch of grass, a devoted female cat was found closely guarding a plastic storage tub. Unknown to the casual passerby, her kittens were sealed inside—abandoned and unable to escape. With no way to help them herself, the mama cat stayed put, hoping for a miracle.
That miracle arrived when a concerned citizen contacted Mitchell Animal Hospital, which quickly activated a rescue mission. They coordinated with their trusted rescue partner, Purrfect Match Cat Rescue, to step in and help.
“We told our trusted rescue partner, Purrfect Match Cat Rescue, ‘Pull them — we’ll take them,’” said Stephanie Preston, adoption and rescue coordinator at Mitchell Animal Hospital. “When our partner arrived, they found Momma lying beside the bucket, staying close to her babies and protecting them the best she could.”
A Mother’s Love Against All Odds
As rescuers approached, they were shocked to discover that the devoted mama cat was missing both of her back paws. Despite this disability, she continued to protect her kittens with unwavering determination.
The five kittens inside the plastic box were filthy, dehydrated, and likely just recently abandoned. Devastatingly, two of the five kittens had already passed away. But the three remaining were alive, mostly healthy, indicating the mother had been feeding and caring for them until they were sealed away.
The rescue team scooped up the whole feline family and transported them for immediate medical attention and care.
Recovery and New Beginnings
The cat family, initially rescued in Memphis, is now under the tender care of Purrfect Match Cat Rescue and will soon transition to Mitchell Animal Hospital’s rescue program in Kingston, New Hampshire.
The brave mother has been named Kenna, and her resilience has amazed all who meet her.
“She’s absolutely incredible. We believe the injuries are old, possibly from past trauma or a congenital issue,” Preston explained. “She’s adapted beautifully — walking, balancing and even playing with her kittens as if nothing ever happened. She’s fully litter-box trained, and her gentle, resilient nature has everyone in awe.”
Kenna is estimated to be just one year old—a baby herself, raising babies.
Meet the Kittens: Kyle, Lyle, and Kayle
The surviving kittens are two boys and one girl, affectionately named Kyle, Lyle, and Kayle. Kyle and Lyle already have a family lined up that wants to adopt them together. Meanwhile, Kenna has an adoption pending as well—with a compassionate veterinarian in New Hampshire.
Kayle, the remaining kitten, is still awaiting her forever home. But with her playful spirit and adorable charm, rescuers are confident that her turn will come soon.
