A Chance Encounter in the Cold
Indiana resident Aubree Johnson had just finished her shift when a seemingly ordinary night transformed into a heartwarming rescue. While walking through a dimly lit and nearly deserted parking lot, Johnson was surprised to notice something fluffy darting near a nearby truck.
“When I got to my car, I saw [her] under the truck parked next to me, rubbing against the truck,” Johnson told The Dodo.
A Tiny Tabby in Need
To her astonishment, the fluffy shape was a small tabby kitten. Johnson had never seen cats wandering around the lot before, especially not during a freezing winter night. With the temperatures dropping rapidly, she knew she couldn’t just drive away.
However, the kitten, later named Lottie, was hesitant. Trust didn’t come easily for the little feline.
Patience and Trust
“I got out, she came close to me and then went under my car,” Johnson explained. Even though the kitten evaded her multiple times, Johnson remained steadfast. She committed to staying until the kitten felt safe enough to come out.
After about 15 minutes of coaxing, curiosity—and perhaps hope—overcame Lottie’s fear.
“She eventually started rubbing against my leg and let me pet her,” said Johnson. This tender moment marked the beginning of their bond.
Warmth, Love, and a Safe Ride
Knowing the kitten needed warmth, Johnson opened her car door. To her relief, Lottie jumped in immediately. Inside the car, she seemed safe and content.
Johnson took a quick photo and posted it on local Facebook groups in hopes of finding her family. She patiently waited 30 minutes, but no one came forward to claim the kitten.
From Rescue to Forever Home
The next day, Johnson brought Lottie to a veterinarian. The kitten was healthy, but there was no microchip to identify her. With no one responding to the lost pet alerts, Johnson realized Lottie likely didn’t have a family before.
“I kept her!” Johnson said with a full heart. She officially became Lottie’s new forever family.
Lottie’s New Life
Now a month into her new life, Lottie is flourishing. Although initially timid around toys and household noises, she has blossomed into a playful and curious little cat. She explores every nook and cranny, loves to “make biscuits,” is always vocal, and seeks snuggles with her new mom.
She even formed a strong bond with Johnson’s 1.5-year-old golden retriever. Despite the size difference, the two have become best friends—and Lottie has developed a habit of playing with her canine brother’s tail.
A Heartwarming Ending
What began as a simple walk to the car became a life-changing moment for both Aubree Johnson and little Lottie. The kitten may have leapt into a car for shelter, but she ended up leaping into a warm, loving home. Johnson, forever changed by the tiny tabby’s trust, can’t imagine it any other way.
“It just makes my heart so full that she put her trust in me,” said Johnson. “A lot of people have told me that she was lucky that I found her, but I am truly the lucky one!”
