Drone Rescues Lost Dog After 20-Mile Solo Adventure
A heart-stopping journey came to a happy end thanks to a drone team using cutting-edge technology to locate a lost senior dog. A 9-year-old Labrador mix named Abbie escaped during a routine transport along the New Jersey Turnpike and disappeared into the surrounding wilderness, triggering a multi-agency search to bring her home safely.
Abbie’s escape happened suddenly during a rest stop en route from a rescue center in South Carolina to her new forever home. During the stop in East Brunswick, New Jersey, she broke free and wandered off into unfamiliar terrain. Parziale launched a drone equipped with thermal imaging technology, capable of detecting heat signatures that are otherwise hidden from view in dense foliage or behind tall brush. In mere minutes, the drone located Abbie’s warm body nestled in a wooded area off a major roadway. The real-time video feed allowed ground teams, including local police and animal control officers, to close in without delay.
Coordinated efforts on the ground ensured the recovery would go smoothly. Officers halted traffic and approached gently to avoid scaring the tired and nervous dog. Aerial footage showed Abbie cautiously standing in thick underbrush as responders gently closed in. She was successfully secured and transported to safety without further trauma.
Michael Parziale, a seasoned drone operator, remarked that this isn’t the team’s first animal rescue. Earlier in the year, they helped recover a lost puppy in under an hour.
