Abandoned Egg Carton Surprises Shelter Staff With Tiny Kitten Inside
A Morning Surprise at PAWS Atlanta
Late last month, the early morning calm at PAWS Atlanta was disrupted in an unusual, heart-tugging way. Arriving at work, an animal care specialist noticed something strange waiting near the shelter’s front gate – an Eggland’s Best cardboard box. It wasn’t eggs this particular box was cradling.
Curious, the specialist approached the container and spotted a little pink nose poking through a hole cut in the side. Upon closer inspection, that nose belonged to a tiny abandoned kitten. But not just one — the box was filled with a litter of six fragile kittens.
Unfortunate but Familiar Discovery
Though the situation was tragic, PAWS Atlanta staff weren’t surprised. Sadly, this was far from the first time helpless animals had been left behind at their gates.
“The ‘egg kittens’ were only one of several groups of kittens left in boxes at PAWS Atlanta last year,” said Brenna Lakeson, the shelter’s communications and community engagement manager. “Even though it’s not abnormal, it’s still heartbreaking and anxiety-inducing to find abandoned animals at the shelter gate.”
Rescue and First Aid
The kittens were carefully removed from the box and examined thoroughly. Despite their unceremonious dumping, they were in remarkably good health — only slightly underweight and infested with fleas, which rescuers quickly treated.
These kittens instantly showed their fighting spirit, adapting well to their new, nutritious diet. Before long, they were placed in loving foster homes to continue their recovery in comfort and safety.
The Importance of Fostering
Fostering made all the difference in the kittens’ journey to health and stability. For newborn animals, care must often go far beyond basic feeding; it includes weaning, socialization, and often round-the-clock attention.
“Fostering makes a huge difference, especially for our youngest kittens and puppies,” Lakeson explained. “Many of them need round-the-clock care, much like a newborn infant. Our fosters are able to give our animals individualized attention and more focused support when it comes to feeding, training, weaning and more.”
Ready for Forever Homes
As they reached three months of age, the kittens underwent their routine spaying and neutering surgeries, an essential step in responsible pet guardianship. Once cleared by vets, they were ready for the exciting chapter of finding their forever homes.
The kittens were lovingly named after breakfast favorites, a nod to the egg carton they were found in:
- Hard Boiled
- Sunnyside
- Scramble
- Omelette
- Yolkster
- Eggs Benedict
One of the most touching adoptions was the duo Sunnyside and Omelette, who were always cuddled up together and were adopted as a bonded pair.
Bittersweet Goodbyes
Seeing the kittens off to their new homes was both joyful and emotional for their rescuers and fosters. Though saying goodbye is never easy, knowing the little ones have safe, loving families gives rescuers the reassurance that their efforts made a lasting difference.
“There’s nothing better than receiving a happy update from an adopter a few weeks, months or even years later!” Lakeson shared. “It’s always hard to say goodbye to a foster when they leave for their forever home, but it helps to hear about how well they’re doing after adoption.”
