How One Woman Won Over a Stray Cat on Her Roof
It was a dreary, rainy day in London when Angie Ymeraj saw a soaked, lonely cat perched on a rooftop near her home. The moment tugged at Ymeraj’s heart. She had no idea that this seemingly small encounter would mark the beginning of a life-changing journey—for both her and the cat she would later name Mochi.
A Cat in Need
At first glance, it was clear Mochi’s condition was dire. She looked frail, drenched, and utterly exhausted. Day after day, Ymeraj noticed the same pattern: Mochi reappearing on the rooftops, scouring for food. The compassionate Londoner couldn’t stand by any longer. She began leaving food out in the hope of helping the nervous feline, but Mochi hesitated to approach.
Taking a Brave Step
Realizing that she needed to try something more daring, Ymeraj hatched a plan. Determined to gain the cat’s trust, she climbed onto the roof and placed the food closer to Mochi’s hiding place.
“The next day, I decided to climb on the roof and place the food closer to her hiding spot,” Ymeraj told The Dodo.
This gesture worked like magic. Slowly but surely, Mochi began eating the food Ymeraj left out. Undeterred by stares from neighbors or what others might think, Ymeraj kept climbing onto the roof each day, focused solely on earning Mochi’s trust.
From Caution to Connection
The process continued:
- Food was placed a little closer to Ymeraj every day
- Mochi grew more comfortable around her human friend
- Physical contact was finally possible after a few weeks
“Soon after, she let me touch her and hold her,” Ymeraj said. It took three weeks, but Mochi eventually surrendered her fear. It turned out she was just waiting for someone to prove that they could be trusted. What she really longed for was love.
Discovering Mochi’s Past
Once Mochi allowed herself to be held, Ymeraj took her to the vet for a check-up. That’s when they discovered something unexpected—Mochi was microchipped. As hopeful as Ymeraj was about keeping her, she did the responsible thing and temporarily relinquished the cat to the vet in case her original family wanted her back.
Fate Steps In
A week passed, and Ymeraj received a phone call. Mochi’s previous family could no longer care for her. The vet asked if Ymeraj was still interested in giving Mochi a forever home. Without hesitation, she said yes.
“That was the moment Mochi became mine,” Ymeraj recalled, her heart full.
A Happy Ending
Today, Mochi spends her days curled up comfortably in Ymeraj’s lap while she works from home—a stark contrast to the lonely, rain-drenched cat she had once been. From rooftop wanderer to beloved house companion, Mochi’s journey is a powerful reminder of what a little compassion and persistence can achieve.
Their story not only highlights the resilience of animals in difficult situations but also the incredible kindness of everyday people who choose to make a difference—one small step, or rooftop, at a time.
