Unexpected Rescue: The Truth About Mama and Her Babies
In the heart of the California desert, at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, an astonishing and heartwarming story unfolded. An adorable calico cat, accompanied by five tiny kittens, was brought to the shelter. The rescue staff initially believed the adult cat to be the mother, as she bore a striking resemblance to the kittens.
However, during a routine physical examination, the team realized something puzzling. The adult cat didn’t exhibit any signs of nursing, an indication that she couldn’t recently have given birth. This discovery led to the surprising revelation that the adult cat was not the mother of the kittens.
“We realized, ‘Oh my gosh, this is not the mama,’” stated Gina Mainwal, marketing manager at Palm Springs Animal Shelter, in an interview with The Dodo.
The shelter staff, puzzled yet intrigued, hypothesized that this cat, despite not being their mother, might be the older sister from a previous litter. While it is not uncommon for the shelter to bring in nursing mama cats who adopt orphaned kittens, a sister cat adopting her siblings was a first for them.
“We’ve seen semi-similar things before … but we haven’t seen anything like this,” Mainwal shared.
The shelter shared a heartfelt video of the devoted sister, now lovingly named Muffins, and her adopted kittens on their Instagram page. The video quickly touched the hearts of many, leading to numerous touching comments. One person commented, “She’s not a stepmom, she’s the mom that stepped up.”
Muffin’s Ever-Growing Family
With her affectionate demeanor, Muffins soon attracted the attention of a potential adopter. Before long, a devoted animal lover drove all the way from Los Angeles to Palm Springs to offer Muffin a forever home.
“She’s a very sweet and just a loving cat, and good with people,” Mainwal remarked. “Everybody loves Muffin.”
Meet the Bakery Litter
As for the kittens, they are thriving under the care of both the shelter staff and their surrogate sister. They have been affectionately named Donut, Croissant, Loaf, Danish, and Cannoli.

While the kittens are still primarily being bottle-fed, they are becoming more playful and energetic with each passing day. “They’re already so big, so it’s pretty fun,” Mainwal noted. “We call them the bakery litter.”
The kittens will be ready for adoption once they reach around eight weeks old and have been fixed. The shelter suggests adopting the kittens in pairs to ensure they have companionship in their new homes. With their endearing charm and playful attitudes, these adorable kittens are bound to find caring families swiftly.
