Unexpected Morning Surprise: 13 Pet Carriers Found Outside Workplace

On a gray day in early February, in New South Wales, Australia, Anna Seares started her day like any other at the animal rescue where she works. As a project manager at Lucky Stars Sanctuary, her routine morning rounds took an unexpected turn when she approached the front gate.

Pet carriers lined outside the gate

To her shock, Seares discovered 13 pet carriers sitting in the gravel. In total, someone had abandoned 19 cats at the sanctuary, leaving them terrified and confused in unfamiliar surroundings.

“My immediate reaction was shock and heartbreak,” Seares shared with The Dodo. The cats appeared visibly stressed, and their hesitant behavior suggested they had endured trauma during their journey. Many were extremely shut-down upon arrival.

Understanding the Cats’ Conditions

Upon veterinary evaluation, the majority of these cats showed significant signs of neglect. Some were severely underweight, while others were infested with fleas. Their past seemed devoid of freedom, as they likely spent most of their lives confined to cages, deprived of the simple joys of stretching or playing.

The vets determined that all the felines were under 2 years old. After thorough medical assessment, they were provided with medical care, microchipping, and vaccinations.

A New Beginning for the Rescued Cats

As the healing process began, a few of the kittens were placed in foster homes, while others remained with the emergency vet for further recovery.

“They are doing so much better now,” reported Seares. “Once they realized they were safe, their personalities really started to come through.” Indeed, some have developed into affectionate companions, yearning for love and reassurance, while others are slowly learning to regain trust.

The Impact of Abandonment

The rescue team wishes that whoever left these kittens at their door had reached out for assistance in a judicious manner. “Abandoning animals is very traumatic for them,” noted Seares. “They are exposed to elements, predators, and stress, with no guarantee they will be found in time.”

Fortunately, these kittens are now thriving and leaving their past hardships behind. This testimony of resilience and survival is marked by moments of affection and gradual trust building within foster homes, signaling a promising future ahead.

  • Some cats have become incredibly affectionate.
  • Others are timid, learning to trust again.
