At just five months old, a tiny kitten known as Dorito captured the hearts of many with her endearing and distinctive features. She was discovered behind a dumpster along with her sister, Cheeto, in Little Canada, Minnesota. They were small, fragile, and battling infections. Yet despite her weariness and delicate appearance, Dorito’s oversized, glassy eyes and unique personality made a lasting impression.
When images of Dorito surfaced online, her appearance led many to question if she was real. Some speculated that she might be a product of artificial intelligence, while others imagined her as an otherworldly creature. However, Dorito was indeed very real, with a story that spoke to resilience and survival against the odds.
Dorito’s striking eyes were attributed to a rare manifestation of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a condition known to cause severe inflammation but, rarely, eye involvement of this nature. While FIP itself is dangerous, affecting a quarter of cases with eye involvement is uncommon. In Dorito’s case, it resulted in noticeable eye swelling that added to her unique appearance.
Rescuers from The Bitty Kitty Brigade took charge of Dorito and her sister. Both kittens needed immediate care as they suffered from colds and injuries. Despite her health challenges, Dorito quickly showcased her affectionate nature, curling into anyone who held her and seeking comfort.
A Rare Diagnosis And A Second Chance
Initially, Dorito’s eyes appeared mostly normal with slight cloudiness noticeable in one eye. Treatment focused on respiratory infections, and the sisters showed improvement, thriving on food and water. However, the situation escalated as Dorito’s eyes unexpectedly began to swell significantly. An ophthalmologist diagnosed FIP, and Dorito’s journey took a serious turn.
For years, FIP was a death sentence. Effective treatment became possible only in the last several years, thanks to advances in veterinary medicine. Dorito was lucky her veterinary team acted swiftly, initiating treatment that would transform her prognosis. With consistent monitoring and adjustments in her medication, Dorito’s condition gradually improved.
Over time, the pressure in her eyes subsided, and she was eventually declared disease-free. While her vision remains limited and she still requires lubricating eye drops due to her inability to close her eyelids fully, Dorito’s vibrant personality remained unchanged.
An unforeseen blessing from their time in foster care was that Dorito’s caregiver became permanently attached to both sisters. What started as temporary foster care blossomed into a lifelong commitment.
Now, Dorito enjoys every day in her home with fearless curiosity. She’s a gentle companion, offering soft kisses and snuggling warmly. Despite her physical challenges, Dorito exudes warmth and wonder, reminding everyone of the resilience and triumph of life.
Her online admirers continue to marvel at her enchanting appearance, while her story of survival showcases the power of love, science, and hope in overcoming life’s toughest battles.
