Heroes Rescue Stray Kitten From Brooklyn Subway Tracks

Earlier this year, in the bustling borough of Brooklyn, New York, commuters were taken by surprise by an unusual sight on the subway tracks. As they waited for their train, a small movement caught their attention. Upon closer inspection, they realized it was a cat, precariously hovering in the train’s path.

Unlike most who walked by, animal rescuer Vanessa Ayala took notice of the cat’s plight. “While most people walked past, he stayed there,” she wrote on her TikTok account, Astoria Paws Cats. “Adapting to a place that was never meant to be home.”

Nobody knew how long this feline had been calling the subway home, but evidence suggested it had been surviving the harsh environment for some time, narrowly avoiding the perilous trains.

Concerned for the cat’s safety, several sympathetic spectators recorded a video and sent it to Ayala. Recognizing the urgency, Ayala was determined to help, though she admitted, “I didn’t really know how I was going to rescue him,” she reflected in a video shared with The Dodo.

Intent on her mission, Ayala ventured to the station at 2 a.m., hoping for a less chaotic environment. She strategically set traps filled with irresistible chicken and fish, and waited. Her plan nearly worked until an approaching train scared the cat away, but Ayala was resolute, “I was not gonna leave without him,” she affirmed.

Success came in the early morning hours, when the cat was finally caught. Ayala safely brought him home, where for the first time in a long while, the cat was comfortable and out of harm’s way. Ayala named him Enzo.

Enzo was promptly taken to the vet, who found him to be about a year old. He had a few broken teeth, a testament to his life on the streets, but fortunately, he had no major health issues. Ayala shared, “Enzo is the proof that resilience is real.”

Initially, Ayala planned to find Enzo a permanent adoptive home once he recovered. However, as days passed, it became clear that saying goodbye was not an option. “Some cats just belong with you,” Ayala expressed. “And maybe he was never meant to leave.”

Enzo’s previous subway life is now a distant memory. Thanks to Ayala’s compassionate intervention, he is destined to live a life filled only with love and security. “He will only know love,” Ayala proudly shared.
