Dog Rescue Mission Reunites Long-Lost Sisters Across State Lines
In the heart of Memphis, Tennessee, Sheri and Dave Hogue have built a sanctuary for Labrador retrievers. Their commitment to rescuing these dogs started many years ago, driven by a deep-seated love for the breed. Living in a house that echoes with the joyful barks of rescued dogs, the Hogues knew their purpose was to offer these misplaced animals a chance at a new beginning.
This mission took a heartwarming turn in July 2024 when Sheri received an urgent request from Kathy Martin, the president of Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption. The rescue needed a foster home for a stray Labrador found in a Kentucky shelter. When Sheri saw the photograph of this forlorn dog, she was immediately reminded of Bella, the beloved Labrador who had blessed their lives for over a decade before succumbing to cancer.
“It’s almost as if Bella sent us a sign,” Sheri recalls. With a sense of destiny, she shared the image with her husband, feeling a pull stronger than just compassionate duty.
“We named her Honey,” Sheri said, reflecting on the initial encounter with the terrified Labrador. Her melancholy eyes and tense frame hinted at a life that had been far from kind. Yet, the Hogues’ home was the ideal setting for healing. Filled with gentle routines, unconditional love, and quiet days, Honey began to release her emotional burdens. Her spirit started to shine, and before long, the couple knew Honey belonged with them, not just as a temporary guest, but as family.
One evening, in April 2025, Sheri stumbled across a post from Lucky Lab Rescue. It was a familiar situation: another Labrador, frail and in need, waited for somewhere safe. Newly inspired, Sheri woke her husband at 2:30 a.m., convinced that fate was speaking to them once more. By Easter Sunday, another journey took them to Indiana to welcome this vulnerable Labrador into their home, whom they named Poppy.
From the moment Poppy entered the house, something beautiful occurred. Honey and Poppy greeted one another with a familiarity that seemed predestined. The dogs, bound as sisters though they had initially been strangers, formed an unbreakable bond, a testament to their shared history and perhaps shared parentage.
Through careful and loving attention, Poppy’s health and spirit rebounded. Like Honey, she thrived, her energy and confidence growing daily. The two Labradors became inseparable, their playful sync hinting at a possible connection beyond current circumstances.
Sheri and Dave could not shake the idea that Honey and Poppy’s bond was deeper than mere pheromones. Their curiosity led to dog DNA testing, curious about any shared lineage. Little did they expect the revealing truth: Honey and Poppy were indeed sisters.
“We were absolutely blown away,” Sheri shares, recalling the moment they learned the DNA test results.
Through the Hogues’ devotion and the unexpected magic of their rescue efforts, two lost sisters found their way back to one another. Today, Honey and Poppy lean into the warmth and safety of their shared home, exploring their surroundings and growing ever closer. The compassion of the Hogues not only saved two dogs but reunited family, a tale of serendipity and caring that touches all who hear it.
