Rescued: Volunteers Save Four Kittens Buried in Dumpster Box
Earlier this month, a dedicated team of animal rescue volunteers in Portal, Georgia, discovered an unexpected surprise while checking on a local feral cat colony. An odd noise emanating from a nearby dumpster directed them to a hidden treasure that needed urgent care.
As they tuned into the faint scratching sounds, the group uncovered a box concealed beneath a discarded grill. Inside, they found four 1-week-old kitten siblings struggling for survival. These tiny felines were trapped in a precarious situation, requiring immediate intervention.
Jessica Ellis, the cat coordinator for the Humane Society of Statesboro and Bulloch County, said, “They were too warm and dehydrated when they came in, likely from being closed inside a box sitting in the sun. They were clearly very young and fragile.”
Intensive Care and Recovery
The rescuers took the kittens to the humane society, where the focus on health and rehabilitation began. Under vigilant supervision, the kittens were given a warm environment to recuperate. They underwent a thorough examination to assess any potential injuries.
Commencing an intensive care regimen, staff members provided round-the-clock attention, teaching the kittens to latch onto a bottle and feeding them every two to three hours.
“You have to monitor their body temperature, help them go to the bathroom, keep them clean, and watch closely for any signs of decline,” Ellis explained. “It’s not something you can afford to be lazy about; someone has to be available at all times.”
New Beginnings for Waffle, Sweet Potato, Shoestring, and Curly
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the volunteers and staff, within a week, all four kittens began eating regularly and gaining strength. Embracing newfound life, they were affectionately named Waffle, Sweet Potato, Shoestring, and Curly.
Currently residing safely at the shelter, the kittens will continue to receive care until they are ready to find their forever homes.
The Impact of Vigilance and Compassion
Ellis extended her heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers whose alertness saved these kittens. She hopes their story will inspire more people to heed unusual occurrences and support local animal shelters through donations and volunteering.
Reflecting on the rescue, Ellis remarked, “If no one had been there to hear them, or if they had been found even a little later, the outcome likely would have been very different. It’s upsetting, but it also reinforces how important it is that people pay attention and act when something doesn’t seem right.”
