Mama Cat Finds New Family for Kitten at Shelter

In the serene environment of the Helen Woodward Animal Center, a heartwarming tale of maternal love and resilience unfolded in early April. The arrival of Mama Mittens and her adorable kitten, Socks, marked the beginning of a unique journey for the center’s staff. Both felines are polydactyl cats, possessing extra toes, which gifted them with larger paws and a distinct presence. The uniqueness of their arrival was destined to bring good fortune to many.

Little did the staff know, Mama Mittens was about to become an integral part of the rescue center, offering help in ways they could not have anticipated. Settling in with grace, Mama Mittens adeptly cared for her three-week-old daughter, Socks. However, the peaceful routine was soon to be expanded when a group of six orphaned one-week-old kittens arrived, needing a mother’s loving care and nourishment.

The staff, unsure of their ability to provide the necessary care alone, turned to Mama Mittens for assistance. With her nurturing nature, Mama Mittens graciously accepted the six kittens, pulling them close and providing the warmth and sustenance they desperately needed. In addition to her extra toes, Mama Mittens displayed an extraordinary capacity for love.

“Overnight, Mama Mittens went from a single mom of one to a single mom of seven,” remarked Courtney Williams, foster assistant manager at Helen Woodward Animal Center. “Animals are amazing. Mama Mittens didn’t just decide to welcome them for nourishment; she immediately began to provide each of them with the love they’d been missing.”

The new additions—five boys and one girl—were given the endearing names Flip, Flop, Jean, Jacket, Hat, and Scarf. Under Mama Mittens’ vigilant care, they all thrive, a remarkable transformation from their initially fragile state. The kittens are expected to be ready for adoption and seeking their forever homes by early June.
