Recently, a group of caring teachers and staff members at a school in San Antonio, Texas, became the unsung heroes of a heartwarming rescue operation. Their day took an unexpected turn when they heard faint meowing sounds appearing to emanate from the street outside their workplace.

The determined rescuers initially had difficulty locating the cat, but thanks to their persistence and good ears, they realized the cries came from below the surface. Lisa Norwood, the public relations manager for San Antonio Animal Care Services (San Antonio ACS), recounted the incident with The Dodo, saying, “It sounded like it was coming from underground.”

Discovery of a Trapped Kitten

Piecing the clues together, the staff determined that a kitten was likely stuck within the depths of a storm drain beneath the street. Without delay, they reached out to San Antonio ACS for professional assistance, realizing that it wouldn’t be an easy task to reach the feline in distress.

Upon arrival, the animal care officers were guided by the sound of anxious cries for help, helping them pinpoint the kitten’s exact location within the storm drain.

According to Norwood, “He was very vocal about his situation. He was not asking for help, he was screaming for help.” The officers soon found the little creature cowering at the bottom of the drain. Several recent storms had swept the area, but fortunately, there was minimal water around the kitten, although he was damp and surrounded by debris.

The Rescue Operation

With swift action and a caring touch, officers devised a plan to bring the tiny kitten to safety. Lowering some food into the drain to comfort the kitten, they distracted the hungry feline and used a long net to lift him out.

“He ate his food really, really quickly, and then while he was eating, they were able to use one of our long nets to essentially scoop him up and bring him to the surface,” shared Norwood.

A New Beginning for Crocodile

Solitary and without any guardian or siblings, it wasn’t clear whether the kitten had fallen into the drain or had been swept in by heavy rains. Fortunately, a thorough vet examination revealed no injuries or health issues.

Post-rescue, the Animal Defense League of Texas took in the kitten, affectionately naming him Crocodile. Norwood humorously remarked, “He’s like the urban legend of the crocodile in the storm drain, but instead he’s this little bitty brown tabby kitty. He’s this tiny little sewer creature.”

Crocodile now resides in foster care, waiting for the day when he’ll be ready for adoption. Thanks to the attentive school staff and the dedicated animal care officers, Crocodile’s future is as bright as can be.
