Preemie Kittens Unite: A Heartwarming Tale of Survival and Friendship

Hannah Shaw, renowned for her expertise in neonatal kitten care and as the founder of the Orphan Kitten Club, recently took on the challenge of nursing a diminutive, premature kitten named Pixie back to health. Born at a mere 49 grams, Pixie was one of the smallest kittens Shaw had ever encountered.

Tiny kitten Pixie held in a hand

“A normal birth weight for a kitten is around 100 grams,” Shaw explained to The Dodo, “so she was less than half of what a typical kitten would weigh.” Pixie required constant, intensive care, including antibiotic treatment and tube feeding, as she was too young even to have a suckling instinct.

Companionship as Part of Recovery

Understanding that kittens thrive with companionship, Shaw expressed, “When we have solo kittens, we always want them to eventually have a friend.” Her wish was granted sooner than expected when another preemie kitten named Puck arrived just three days after Pixie.

Despite weighing slightly more at 60 grams, Puck was even more premature than Pixie. “He didn’t have all of his fur yet,” Shaw noted, describing his underdeveloped appearance typical of preemies.

A Delicate Union

Shaw awaited the day when the two could finally be introduced, ensuring both were medically fit to be around other cats due to their underdeveloped immune systems. After two weeks, the much-anticipated meeting occurred. Pixie, whose eyes had just opened, curiously sniffed Puck, whose eyes remained sealed at that moment. Yet, Puck seemed comforted, nestling close to Pixie.

“Puck did not open his eyes until day 25, which is unusual,” Shaw remarked. “Typically, kittens open their eyes between 8 to 12 days.”

Growing Strong Together

The bond between the two kittens quickly cemented. With Pixie being slightly older, she took the lead, much to Puck’s delight. Shaw commented, “Puck is a sweet little guy who sort of follows her lead.”

Fast forward to two months since their introduction, and Pixie and Puck have flourished. They’ve transformed into playful, rambunctious kittens, often seen frolicking around toys and clambering up cat trees.

“They may not be related by blood, but they certainly act like they are sister and brother,” Shaw shared on Instagram, reflecting on their enduring bond.

A Bright Future Ahead

Shaw’s joy magnified upon finding an adopter willing to take in both Pixie and Puck, ensuring that the best friends would not be separated. It’s only fitting that after everything they’ve experienced, they will continue their lives side by side in a loving forever home.
