Teacher Discovers Abandoned Crate with Five Baby Animals Inside

Driving daily down Dowdy Ferry Road, Jennifer Pond, a high school teacher and devoted animal rescuer in Dallas, Texas, has learned to be exceptionally observant. Recognized for her nonprofit animal rescue organization, Pond of Love, Pond has seen her share of heart-wrenching encounters with abandoned animals.

“That particular area is unfortunately known for animal dumping,” Pond told The Dodo. “I’ve found hundreds of animals there.”

One typical morning, something unusual caught Pond’s eye—a wooden crate overturned on the roadside. Initially, she thought of driving on but her instincts urged her otherwise. “Something about it didn’t feel right,” Pond noted. “I knew if I didn’t turn around and check, I wouldn’t stop thinking about it all day.”

Deciding to trust her intuition, Pond turned back. Upon approaching the scene, her suspicions proved correct; she quickly discovered a tiny kitten hidden in the grass. Continuing her investigation, she flipped the crate revealing four more fragile kittens.

Understanding the kittens’ urgent needs, Pond abandoned her original plans. “I rushed back home to figure out my next move,” she recalled. “I was running late to work, but these babies were my top priority.”

Pond examined the kittens and found they were mostly healthy, having likely been abandoned that same morning. At merely ten days old, they were in great need of care, as one had not even opened his eyes yet. “Kittens that young are extremely vulnerable and require around-the-clock care,” Pond explained. “They need to be bottle-fed every couple of hours, kept warm, and even stimulated to use the bathroom. Without immediate care, they likely wouldn’t have survived very long.”

With assistance from fellow animal rescuers, Pond organized a plan to ensure the kittens’ health and safety, with friends stepping in to help when her teaching duties called. Thanks to this joint effort, the kittens thrived and blossomed over the next two months.

“It’s been amazing watching them grow from fragile little babies into playful kittens with completely different personalities,” Pond shared. “They’re all incredibly sweet and affectionate.”

Pond affectionately named the kittens after breads — Brioche, Pita, Rye, Matzo, and Pumpernickel. The New Life Cat Rescue organization welcomed four of the kittens into foster care, readying them for adoption into permanent homes.

Pumpernickel, however, was destined to stay with Pond. “I adopted him myself,” she said. “After everything we went through together, I just felt such a strong bond with him that I couldn’t let him go.”
