Veterinary Staff Surprised by Mysterious Duct-Taped Box Contents

The unsuspecting staff at a medical veterinary clinic in the U.K. had no idea what awaited them outside their door when they discovered a rectangular planter box wrapped tightly in plastic and duct tape. The box had just a few holes poked through the top, enough to suggest life inside.

A note attached to the box ambiguously read: “Cat & 3 kids.” It also mentioned being found on a side road along with a scrawled phone number. As the vet staff peered inside, they quickly realized that the content was not as the note had suggested. Rather than a cat and three kittens, they found three pregnant adult cats squashed together inside the container.

Nobody can say for certain how long the poor cats were trapped inside but suspicions imply they might have been there overnight. Attempts to call the number on the note were futile, leaving more questions than answers.

Rescue and Care for the Trio of Expectant Cats

Sarah Avison, the cat care manager at Yorkshire Cat Rescue, expressed her horror at what the cats had endured: “To be squished into a planter — even when you’re not pregnant — must be awful,” Avison stated. It was not lost on her what could have transpired had the cats managed to escape the box.

“What if they’d scratched their way out?” Avison pondered. “Maybe they’d end up giving birth outside or being run over.” Fortunately, they were rescued just in time. Yorkshire Cat Rescue welcomed two of the pregnant cats, whom they named Charlie and Cherry. A different rescue group took in the third.

New Life Brings Hope

Soon after their arrival at the rescue, both mother cats gave birth to healthy kittens. Charlie brought four kittens into the world: Augustus, Josephine, Oompa, and Loompa, while Cherry was the proud mother of two kittens: Wonka and Humbug.

“We’ve gone for a ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ theme with the kittens’ names,” Avison said with a chuckle.

A Bright Future Ahead

The remarkable survival and recovery of these cats are truly heartwarming. Despite their traumatic experience, they are adjusting well. Both moms and their kittens have moved to a foster home where they will remain until they are ready to be adopted.

Avison shared, “Cherry’s a little bit more reserved, and obviously they’ve been through a lot, but they’re settled in really well and they’re eating well. We’ve got no concerns health-wise with them. They’re lovely.”

This rescue has been an emotional journey but also rewarding for Avison. “It’s nice to show them that not all humans would shove a cat in a box,” she reflected.
