Boater Rescues Frozen Baby Animal Trapped on Icy Dock Beam
In the middle of a biting January winter, Brian Owen stumbled upon an unexpected rescue mission while walking past a marina in Detroit, Michigan. As he ambled by the waterfront, his attention was captured by faint cries echoing from the dock area. It was here where he spotted a helpless kitten, precariously perched on a metal beam above the icy waters.
Despite the sub-zero temperatures causing everything to be shrouded in frost, Owen braved the elements to get closer. The sight that met him was heartbreaking; the kitten’s tiny paws had adhered to the beam due to the intense cold, making her unable to move.
“She’s frozen stuck,” Owen exclaimed in a video for The Dodo, capturing the instant realization of her plight.
With careful attention and empathy, he used a towel infused with warm water to gradually thaw the ice entrapping the kitten’s paws. Once freed, Owen cocooned her within his coat, sharing his body heat to revive her from the cold clutches of winter.
The duo was soon bound by destiny. Owen, despite his allergy to cats, could not avert rescuing this frail creature he named Chilly, a tribute to her cold-weather rescue.

In her newfound energetic form, Chilly revealed her vivacious personality to Owen, demonstrating her love for toys and perching on cat trees. She even developed an affectionate relationship with Owen’s two golden retrievers, blending seamlessly into her new family environment.

Motivated by his experience with Chilly, Owen embarked on a mission to assist the local feline population within his community. Regular visits to local rescues became a norm as Owen facilitated stray kittens in finding caring homes. His efforts expanded to trap-neuter-release activities for established cat colonies, while he also provided food and shelter for stray cats braving the harsh Michigan winters.
