When Cooper, an 8-year-old Labrador, first met his family’s new kitten Winston, he was hesitant. After all, Winston was full of energy, a stark contrast to Cooper’s calm demeanor. However, Winston, with his tenacious spirit, was determined to win over his canine companion.
“Winston was obsessed with Coop, and eventually, they became good friends,” Chris Avery, Cooper and Winston’s owner, shared with The Dodo.
The pair became inseparable. Whether napping in the sunshine or exploring their owner’s farm, these unlikely friends found a mutual love for one another.
“Cooper, known for his sensitivity, and Winston, the feisty little rascal, seemed perfectly matched despite their differences,” Avery noted. “We’re often surprised to find them cuddled close by the fireplace in winter or basking in the yard sunshine during summer.”
An Unexpected Turn
Things took a sudden turn when Winston went missing one evening. Cooper was devastated, overtly displaying his worry and longing for his missing friend.
“We kept finding Coop sitting in the front yard (in the same spot they’d usually be snoozing in the sun together), looking out anxiously to the edges of the property,” Avery explained. “The sadness in his eyes was undeniable. He was miserable.”
Day in and day out, Cooper maintained his vigil, sitting with his back to the house, rigorously scanning the property line without fail.
Remarkably, even Cooper’s mealtime did not sway him from his post. “I even had to go out and bring him in for dinner (which has never really happened before),” Avery remarked.
Despite loving his food, his devotion to Winston was unparalleled. Cooper ate his meals outside, remaining ever vigilant.
The Joyful Reunion
As days turned into a week, Avery was worried for both Cooper and the missing Winston. Then one morning, an incredible surprise awaited—the return of Winston.
The joy was palpable throughout the home, but it was Cooper who felt the greatest relief, visibly transformed with happiness upon Winston’s return.
“Coop was ecstatic to have his buddy back. It’s like a burdensome weight had been lifted from his shoulders, the sadness in his eyes completely vanished,” Avery shared.
Since that day, Cooper and Winston’s bond only deepened. They became even more inseparable, cherishing every moment together.
“I’ve noticed that since Winston’s adventure, the two stick together even more closely,” Avery admitted. “Coop seems to ensure he keeps a close watch on Winston.”
