Feline Volunteer: Cat Brings Comfort to Dogs at Shelter

At the heart of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue (MSDR) is a community where every role is essential. From dedicated shelter staff to enthusiastic volunteers, each position plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth run of the rescue facility. But among these indispensable roles, one stands out uniquely — that of the resident cat tester.

Every other week, the resident cat tester is tasked with determining how compatible each senior dog is with cats, a crucial aspect for many potential adopters who already have feline companions.

Mustache, MSDR's first cat tester

Meet Mustache: MSDR’s First Cat Tester

MSDR’s inaugural cat tester, Mustache, was a fluffy orange cat with a knack for socializing with dogs. His calm demeanor made him ideal for the position right from his first day on the job.

Mustache didn’t just tolerate the dogs he met; he seemed to develop a strategy to put them at ease. He would calmly observe them and let them make the first move. This approach not only built confidence in the dogs but also provided valuable insights to the staff.

Mustache’s contributions went beyond the shelter environment, having a significant impact on MSDR’s mission of matching each senior dog with the right forever home. His presence was especially crucial considering that about 40 percent of adoption applicants have cats at home.

A Legacy Carved in Love

Sadly, Mustache passed away after bravely battling kidney disease. He was cherished by his guardian, Missy Dominguez, and will forever be remembered for his vital role and positive influence within MSDR.

Little Dude: Taking the Baton

After Mustache’s departure, a new feline face stepped up — Little Dude. With a dog-savvy nature and a love for his canine family, Little Dude took on the role with enthusiasm and expertise. His ability to read dog’s body language ensures that any interactions are calm and positive.

Little Dude’s presence has ensured that many more senior dogs find their cat-friendly homes, continuing Mustache’s legacy and bringing comfort to the shelter’s inhabitants.

Through the combined efforts of cats like Mustache and Little Dude, Muttville Senior Dog Rescue remains a beacon of hope, helping senior dogs find loving families who can appreciate their golden years.
