Highway Heroes Rescue 12 Cats from Sweltering Abandoned Van
On what was one of the hottest days in Wisconsin, a routine assignment quickly transformed into a heroic rescue mission. A highway maintenance crew stumbled upon a heart-wrenching scene at a park-and-ride lot: twelve cats and kittens trapped inside an abandoned van, suffocating in the overwhelming heat. What began as a day for mowing led to an unforgettable life-saving operation.
The unsuspecting discovery took place at a parking lot near Evergreen Drive and County Road N/Freedom Road. With outside temperatures soaring to 90 degrees, the enclosed environment within the van had become a perilous trap for these felines.
Dakota DeWilde, a newcomer to the Outagamie County Highway Department, found himself on an unexpected path. “I thought I was signing up for some boring highway worker thing,” he confessed. “But I was very pleasantly surprised to have met 12 little lives.”
It was DeWilde who first noticed an unusual odor reminiscent of a litter box. Ignoring it was not an option. The investigation led him to a suspicious van. Its flat tires and damaged front axle indicated that it had been abandoned for quite some time. Upon peering through the windows, he discovered a little black kitten staring back at him—a silent plea for help.
A Battle Against Time and Heat
Inside the van, the conditions were dire. Adult cats lay motionless, panting heavily, their strength sapped by the intense heat. Kittens, though more energetic, were still trapped in a dangerous situation. It became clear that the animals had endured sweltering temperatures for hours.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the crew acted quickly by alerting their supervisor. The urgent call reached Patrol Superintendent Adam Duchow at 1 p.m., who recognized the severity of the circumstances. “It was the hottest day of the year so far,” Duchow recounted. “Everyone was concerned immediately for the well-being of these cats.”
Law enforcement promptly arrived, confirming the van as abandoned. The struggle to free the cats commenced, their distress palpable as the van’s doors were finally opened.
Inside the suffocating vehicle, the team found a harrowing sight: cats and kittens huddled in desperation. An improvised rescue ensued as a noticed kennel became a refuge, allowing the swift transportation of the rescued animals to safety.
After the rescued cats were securely gathered, it was Duchow himself who reflected on the experience. “I couldn’t imagine one cat alone in a van under that heat, much less 12 of them piled up on one another,” he said.
Twelve Saved Lives and a Message of Vigilance
Today, the Fox Valley Humane Association has taken the cats into their care, providing the attention and shelter these animals desperately needed. A routine day thus transformed into a narrative of compassion and quick thinking, ultimately offering twelve vulnerable lives a hopeful future.
This event underscores a critical lesson: never underestimate the dangerous conditions a closed vehicle presents, especially in warm weather. The temperature inside can escalate rapidly, trapping animals in life-threatening conditions.
