Motorcyclist Rescues Animal Mistaken for Trash on Highway
Last Tuesday, Diego’s motorcycle commute home began as uneventful as usual until he encountered an unexpected sight on a busy highway. While navigating through a traffic jam in the left lane, Diego noticed something moving towards the edge of the road.
“As I’m passing up the lane of traffic, I noticed something up ahead in the middle of the lane move towards the edge,” Diego explained to The Dodo. “Honestly, it looked like a bag or some kind of trash.”
A Surprising Discovery
In a matter of seconds, Diego realized that the object was not trash—it was a little kitten, stranded and vulnerable amidst the oncoming traffic. With a swift decision, Diego knew he had to act.
“There was not a thought in my mind once I seen it other than let me get this cat off the road!” Diego recounted.
He quickly maneuvered onto the emergency lane, parked his bike, and dashed into traffic to rescue the kitten. “I turned off my bike and ran as fast as I could to get it off the highway,” Diego said. “It felt like the slowest sprint of my life!”
Bringing the Kitten to Safety
Thanks to another driver who stopped traffic, Diego safely scooped up the kitten and returned to his motorcycle. The little feline appeared unharmed, albeit scared.
“He had no physical injuries when I picked him up, so I don’t think anyone dropped [him] from a car,” Diego mentioned on Instagram. “[He] likely was in someone’s engine bay and had a low fall.”
Initially planning to carry the kitten in his work bag, Diego instead tucked the kitten into his jacket for the remainder of the ride home. “I only had about 5 miles left and the kitten was perfectly calm on the way home,” Diego reported. “He just buried himself into my side, and I’m guessing that kept him relaxed.”
Settling into a New Home
Upon arriving home, Diego placed the kitten in a designated guest room to help him adjust. While initially frightened, the kitten, named Lucky, soon warmed up to Diego’s efforts to comfort him.
Diego regularly checked in on Lucky, and his patience was rewarded when the kitten eventually stopped hissing and allowed Diego to hold him.
However, it was Diego’s daughter, Allison, who almost immediately bonded with Lucky. “It was almost instant that my daughter started asking about the kitty and wanting to pet him,” Diego shared. “When she gets up in the morning, she would always ask for ‘Mommy’ and now she asks for ‘kitty’… that’s when I knew she was attached.”
The decision to keep Lucky was cemented as he became an inseparable part of their family. Diego reflected, “I’ve always brought animals home. I can’t stand to see animals in need.”
Today, Lucky lives happily with Diego and his family, a testament to the heartwarming bond created through one man’s act of kindness on a busy highway.
