Heroic Kids Rescue Dog Thrown from Rollover Crash
One frightening afternoon quickly turned into a hopeful and inspiring story as a violent rollover crash separated a beloved dog from its owner. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, finding the driver unharmed but distressingly aware that her canine companion, Sugar, had gone missing, ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Officers with the Vermilion Police Department, along with the Vermilion Fire Department and Lifecare EMS, responded swiftly to the single-vehicle rollover crash. The crash investigation revealed that a 2008 Ford Focus traveling westbound on Liberty Avenue lost control, hit a landscaping boulder, and rolled over several times before coming to a stop. Inside the vehicle were the driver and her dog, Sugar. Terrified and disoriented, Sugar ran into nearby woods after being thrown from the car.
The driver fortunately suffered only minor injuries, thanks to wearing her seatbelt, but the emotional impact of losing Sugar was profound. Amid the chaos, she notified responders of Sugar’s friendly demeanor and that the dog was microchipped, providing hope that Sugar might be found.

While the ordeal was tragic and harrowing for her owner, the remarkable support from the community and the actions of several children led to a heartwarming reunion with Sugar.
