Heroic Local Woman Rescues Stranded Cats to Honor Neighbor’s Memory

For a small group of outdoor cats, life took a sudden turn when the elderly couple who cared for them were no longer around. Left behind at their former home, these cats were thrust into uncertainty. Fortunately, Kitty Carson, an independent animal rescuer, rose to the occasion, ensuring the feline companions would not face their plight alone.

Rescued Cats

The family of Carson’s late neighbor reached out to her for help rehoming the man’s animals. The dogs went to a shelter, and the indoor cats found refuge with relatives. However, the discovery of several outdoor cats around the property brought new challenges. Carson, recognizing the bond she shared with her neighbor’s wife over a mutual love for animals, felt a personal connection to assist in their rescue.

Kitty Carson Rescues Cats

Though initially deemed feral by family members, the cats approached Carson despite being strangers. Their demeanor was more anxious than wild, revealing their discomfort and confusion in their new reality. Carson noted, “They’re not feral, just nervous and confused,” as she embarked on her mission to save them.

In an urgent turn of events, one cat, an 8-month-old female, was found to be pregnant. Aware of the rapid growth of animal populations, Carson prioritized rescuing this young cat. After successful capture, the cat underwent a spay procedure at a local animal resource center, averting further complications.

The rescue mission then shifted to the kitten’s mother, a cat barely over eighteen months old. Upon discovering the mother cat’s hidden kittens in a locked shed, Carson faced significant challenges. The situation was complicated further when the protective mother moved her kittens inside a storm drain.

Mother Cat and Kittens

Persistently tracking the mother cat, Carson navigated her fears of potential disaster when a black cat matching the mother’s description was found deceased nearby. Relief washed over Carson when she confirmed the mother cat was indeed safe. This assurance led her to meticulously lift the storm drain grate, retrieve the kittens, and ultimately reunite the family. On May 18, the entire feline group was secured and safe.

Upon rescue completion, Carson achieved remarkable success:

  • The young pregnant cat swiftly recovered post-surgery and found a promising future with a rescuer skilled in socializing undersocialized cats.
  • The mother cat and her kittens continue to receive fostering, with a steady path toward full health and well-being.
  • Overcoming the odds, additional kittens related to the family were also discovered and rescued. All kittens are now under temporary care, awaiting their progression to a local humane society for permanent adoption.

The transformation for this cat family, from living in sheds and drains to thriving in safety, embodies a tale of survival and compassion. Instead of battling for sustenance, these kittens now flourish in a protective environment, while their mother rests easy from the burden of constant threat.

While Carson cannot adopt them, due to already housing numerous rescued animals, her focus remains on improving outcomes for vulnerable creatures. By achieving their safety, Carson has not just fulfilled a mission of rescue but has honored her neighbor’s memory, giving hope and a future to the otherwise abandoned feline family.

@thekittyandmarley My elderly neighbor adored animals. When she passed years ago, her husband continued caring for them. He passed recently and the two indoor cats went to family, the two dogs to a rescue, but nobody could help the outdoor mama and daughter. I was told they were both feral. They lost their humans. Their other cat and dog companions. All they had was each other. They were so hungry, even though I was new, they came right to me. They’re not feral – just nervous and confused. The daughter is only 8 months old and was already pregnant. Thankfully I was able to get her in for a spay/abort the next day. She’ll spend the next 10 days recovering in my library before moving to her new home. The mama, a young cat, only ~1 1/2 years old, is much friendlier but was hiding a secret – she’d given birth to a new litter. After crying like a kitten, she led me straight to the bush where her babies were hiding. The next step is to get mama and babies so they can get the care they need and the cycle stops now. #rescuecat #rescuekitten #straycat #spayabort #adoptdontshop ♬ 500 Miles – Peter, Paul & Mary
