Heartwarming Rescue: Home Depot Visitors Discover 15 Puppies in Overcrowded Kennel
A few weeks back, staff at the Safe Haven Humane Society found themselves caught in a whirlwind of responsibility when unexpected visitors arrived in their lobby with a huge crate brimming with cats. The Good Samaritans explained that they had stumbled upon these felines while shopping at their local Home Depot and were concerned about their well-being.
A Surprising Discovery
According to Katie Storm, the marketing and development specialist at Safe Haven Humane Society, the shelter typically operates on an appointment basis, but considering the critical nature of the situation, an exception was made. The cats, secured in crates, were found abandoned outside the Home Depot, and their rescuers brought them to the shelter immediately after waiting in vain for their owner to appear.
“Our front office gave me a call and was like, ‘Hey, I really need some help. These people just showed up [with] an unknown amount of cats in their car in crates,’” Storm shared.
Opening the Crate of Curiosity
After carefully unpacking the crates, the shelter staff were astounded to find not only four adult cats—two of whom were heavily pregnant—but also an additional nine kittens. This brought the total number of rescued felines to 15.
The compassionate crew at the Safe Haven Humane Society wasted no time in providing the medical attention needed and ensured all the felines received ample food. Initially, they kept the cats together to minimize stress and provided them with warmth and care, which had them feeling secure by the next morning.
A Fairy Tale Ending
In a charming nod to adventure and new beginnings, the staff decided to name these cats after beloved Disney movie characters. As expressed by the humane society on Instagram, “after everything they’ve been through, they all deserve a happily-ever-after.”
In keeping with this happy ending, all nine kittens and four adult cats, named Alice, Bo Peep, Jasmine, and Aurora, were successfully adopted within two weeks. Meanwhile, the pregnant cats, Alana and Flora, gave birth to healthy kittens while being lovingly fostered, and will soon be ready for adoption.
Katie Storm, reflecting on the remarkable journey from rescue to adoption, remarked on how achieving this outcome breaks a potential cycle of endless reproduction for these felines. “To know that they probably would have been stuck in a cycle of having kittens over and over if nobody found them is heartbreaking for us,” she shared. “So we’re happy that they get to be happy and in homes and loved.”
