Heroic German Shepherds Rescue Abandoned Kittens with Sharp Noses

From the exterior, the aged backyard shed appeared to be nothing more than a neglected storage space. However, inside, a sorrowful secret awaited discovery. What started as two German Shepherds unwilling to depart from the area soon blossomed into an unexpected and emotional rescue.

Two dedicated German Shepherds, Mya and Livia, belonging to Ohio resident Brett Dugas and his girlfriend, Guste, played a pivotal role in this story. The couple became curious after noticing their dogs fixating on the shed for several days. This curiosity led them to discover two vulnerable kittens locked inside, showcasing how the loyal instincts of dogs can make a significant difference in safeguarding innocent lives.

Initially, Brett and Guste assumed the dogs were merely intrigued by one of the neighborhood groundhogs that occasionally roamed around the shed. The structure had been unused for years, packed with old tools, making it an unlikely sanctuary for anything else. Despite this, the dogs’ determination only grew stronger, prompting a closer inspection.

Brett mentioned to The Dodo, “Mya and Livia were just all over the door, sniffing vigorously. Then Mya began digging at the ground right beside it.” Their persistence hinted that something more serious had captured their attention. Driven by this concern, Brett decided to investigate further by looking through the shed’s dusty window. What he found was heartbreaking.

Inside was a tiny gray kitten, eyes tightly shut, meowing for help. The immediate sight urged Brett to act quickly. He had no way of knowing how long the kitten had been trapped without essential resources. Understanding the urgency of the situation, he obtained bolt cutters from a neighbor to open the locked door.

Upon entering, Brett gently retrieved the frightened kitten. It soon became evident that the little cat’s eyes were heavily infected and in need of medical attention. Not wanting to leave any animals behind, Brett continued his search through the clutter.

A second kitten was uncovered, hidden quietly in one corner of the shed. These two brothers, relying on each other for survival, were finally saved, thanks to Mya and Livia’s acute senses. Realizing the need for immediate action, Brett contacted Lucky Paws Rescue, which promptly agreed to take the kittens in for care.

Both kittens were found suffering from severe eye infections, but there was hope. Under the rescue’s diligent care, each kitten swiftly started responding to treatment. “They’re reacting well to the medicine, and [the rescuer] said they’ll heal fine,” Brett shared. Within ten days, significant improvements were evident as the kittens regained strength and health. Inspired by their rescue location, the brothers were aptly named BARNey and SHEDeur.

Today, the playful kittens are thriving, growing under the rescue’s care. When they reach the right age, they’ll be neutered and made available for adoption, allowing them to start a new chapter with loving families.

This remarkable rescue reminds us that animals observe what we may overlook. Whether Mya and Livia were driven by scent or an instinctual response, their persistence saved two vulnerable lives. “Whether Mya and Livia’s intentions were to smell a snack or help do the right thing, their noses were vital in making it happen,” Brett reflected. Thanks to their alertness, a previously locked shed became the site of a heartwarming rescue, giving BARNey and SHEDeur the fresh start they deserved.
