Abandoned Box of Kittens Found on Shelter Doorstep
Late one evening, Magee Humes received an alert on her phone that sent her instincts into overdrive. As the vigilant executive director of the Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL), she is always in tune with everything happening at the shelter, no matter where she is. On this occasion, it was the outdoor motion sensors that captured her attention.
Upon checking the live camera feed on her phone, Humes’ heart sank. A lone cardboard box was sitting quietly outside the shelter’s intake lobby’s door. The scene was all too familiar.
“We’ve seen this kind of thing too many times before, and the box usually contains animals who need our help,” explained Tommy Sanfilippo, MARL’s content coordinator, in conversation with The Dodo.
Determined to help, Humes rushed to the shelter, hoping to make it in time. When she arrived and opened the cardboard lid, she discovered five small kittens looking up at her.
The kittens were in relatively good condition but clearly in need of care. Humes, alongside her staff, carried the box inside and immediately got to work cleaning the kittens.
“They had lots of fleas, so some late-night flea baths were in order,” mentioned Sanfilippo.
A Mysterious Cat Outside the Window
As the team at MARL was cleaning up the kittens, they noticed an adult cat peering through the window, meowing softly. Initially presumed to be a random stray, she seemed particularly interested in the kittens.
“She seemed to be super interested in the kittens,” noted Sanfilippo. Acting on a hunch, the team reviewed the security footage and discovered that the same cat had emerged from the box shortly after being abandoned.
In the footage, the team watched as the mother cat leapt from the box and scurried into the night, likely to survey her new surroundings. When she returned to find her babies gone, she must have panicked.
After witnessing this, MARL staff quickly let the mother cat in, uniting her with her kittens.
“She was so excited to be reunited with her babies, and she was very friendly with our staff,” Sanfilippo shared. “I think she knew that we were there to help.”
They named the mother cat Post-It and her kittens Crayola, Scotch, Expo, Elmer, and Sharpie. All were soon taken to a foster home where they could stay safe and warm.
The Road to a New Beginning
While it was heartbreaking for the MARL team to find another box of abandoned animals, the discovery of Post-It and her kittens in time was a silver lining. They look forward to finding them loving homes.
“Mom and kittens are currently living with one of MARL’s amazing fosters, and they’ll be ready for adoption soon,” added Sanfilippo.
