In a remarkable story of transformation, Kayla Denney has turned what was once a somber place into a beacon of hope for animal lovers everywhere. When Kayla took over the Taft Animal Control Center in Taft, Texas, the shelter was facing dire circumstances. Dogs brought into the facility were almost certain to face euthanasia, with nearly 100% of them not making it out alive. However, less than a year into her tenure, Kayla has miraculously changed the shelter’s fate, turning it into a no-kill haven.
The challenges Kayla faced were staggering. Prior to her arrival, the shelter functioned without electricity and had only minimal water access for cleaning purposes. Resources were limited, with no volunteers present to offer assistance or companionship to the animals. The grim routine at the shelter included a dreaded “Kill Day” every Wednesday, where almost every animal was euthanized. City of Taft’s Chief of Police John Cornish and the city manager, Denise Hitt, expressed their agony over the situation, stating, “The animals looked sad. The building looked sad.”
Determined to initiate change, Chief Cornish and Ms. Hitt had inspiring discussions about transforming the shelter into a no-kill facility. Their vision led them to Kayla, who took on the challenge with passion and determination. Kayla began by engaging the community through social media. She announced her new role as the Animal Control Officer/Supervisor for Taft on her personal Facebook page, urging followers to offer positivity and help.
To her delight, the community responded with overwhelming support. Donations poured in, with the shelter receiving 800 boxes filled with vital supplies. Generosity from local citizens even allowed for the installation of electricity in the facility for the first time. Through outreach and relationship-building, Kayla fostered trust within the community, gradually recruiting volunteers and gaining support from local rescue groups. Her efforts resulted in a monumental milestone—since her tenure began, not a single animal has been euthanized at the shelter.
Amidst these accomplishments, Kayla’s dedication did not go unnoticed. Nationally recognized by the PetCo Foundation, Kayla was awarded the 2019 National ‘Unsung Hero’ Award. Despite not being aware of her nomination, she was selected from thousands of nominees, earning the top honor along with a $25,000 prize. The award not only validated her efforts but also provided additional resources to further enhance the shelter’s capabilities.
Kayla’s plans for the shelter are ambitious and heartwarming. She intends to invest the prize money back into the facility, focusing on improvements such as indoor and outdoor kennels designed with guillotine doors for seamless weather protection. Dog runs with grassy areas are also on her wishlist, aimed at providing the animals with ample outdoor time and space to play.
