Yuri’s story is one of triumph over adversity, resilience, and an inspiring journey from a troubled past to a heroic future. This exceptional dog began her journey at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter in Valley View, Ohio. Arriving there, Yuri was in a dire state. She was suffering from pneumonia, bore scars on her back and legs, tested heartworm positive, and was pregnant. Yet, her story doesn’t end in misfortune.
Challenges from the Start
Shortly after her arrival, Deputy Dog Warden Amanda Kopec found herself drawn to Yuri. Little did Kopec know at the time, Yuri would not only become a foster success but an invaluable resource to other shelter dogs as well. Yuri was initially overwhelmed by her surroundings. She gave birth to a large litter of puppies at the shelter, but despite all the medical care available, the puppies failed to thrive and succumbed to canine herpes.
Kopec, who had taken Yuri and her puppies home as fosters, experienced the heartbreak of losing each puppy. Through this challenging period, Yuri leaned on Kopec for solace and, eventually, comforted each other through their shared loss.
Undiagnosed Conditions and Adaptation
Further observation revealed peculiar behaviors in Yuri—she would wobble when walking, startle easily when approached from behind, and only respond to commands when visibly looking at Kopec. After a thorough examination, Yuri was diagnosed with neurological abnormalities and deafness. This presented a new set of challenges for Kopec, who worried about Yuri’s ability to integrate with other canines and adopt a normal lifestyle.
Becoming a Play Group Star
Kopec was determined to help Yuri adapt, despite her unique challenges. She introduced Yuri to the dog play groups at the shelter, anxious about how the other dogs would react. Contrary to Kopec’s concerns, Yuri turned out to be a play group rock star. She showed remarkable leadership qualities and became a mentor to other dogs, teaching them how to socialize and behave in a group setting—critical skills for dogs in search of forever homes.
Teamwork Personified
Through dedicated teamwork, Yuri and Kopec spent over a year helping other shelter dogs adjust to play groups. In doing so, they forged an unbreakable bond. This journey culminated in Kopec adopting Yuri officially, turning their temporary foster arrangement into a permanent home—her first ever ‘foster failure.’ Yuri’s story inspired Kopec, providing her with the confidence to work closely with dogs who require additional support and patience.
Kopec’s moving journey with Yuri caught the attention of the Petco Foundation, resulting in a nomination for the 2019 Holiday Wishes Award. The story of their bond and Yuri’s transformation into a helper dog won Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter an $11,000 grant from the foundation, strengthening the support for even more animals in their care.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, providing opportunities for nominators to secure grant awards for the organizations they adopted from.

Her story not only sheds light on the plight of shelter dogs but also champions the spirit of resilience, showing how love and care can transform troubled beginnings into inspirational futures.
