When a spirited black and white pig found itself racing down the vibrant streets of West Hollywood, it unknowingly set off a chain of events that would reshape its life forever. The adventurous runaway, swiftly dubbed “Wilbur,” attracted the eyes of many — from curious passersby to intrigued residents, and, soon enough, to the watchful world on social media. The viral sensation left everyone wondering about this little pig’s origins and, importantly, where he truly belonged.
Eventually corralled and taken to the West L.A. Animal Shelter, Wilbur’s antics sparked a growing interest among the public. With no family coming forward to reclaim him, the shelter looked forward to finding him a forever home. The interest in Wilbur was so high that a silent auction was held to ensure he was placed in the best possible care. Among the bidders was a surprising participant — a representative for legendary songwriter Diane Warren.
Warren, whose pen has crafted hits for music giants like Celine Dion and Aerosmith, had been captivated not by a melody but by the remarkable pig of West Hollywood. Marcia Zwilling, managing director of the Diane Warren Foundation, shared with ABC 7 that Warren was motivated to act after spotting footage of Wilbur’s escapade. “Get the pig,” she commanded, setting in motion an unexpected adoption journey.
From the Bustling City to Tranquility in Malibu
Winning the auction ensured Wilbur’s final dash would lead him to a serene seven-acre sanctuary in Malibu — a haven Warren dedicates to animal welfare. Wilbur would now commune with a variety of rescued animals and find companionship in the likes of goats, horses, and chickens. Among the lush fields and soothing landscapes of Mousebutt Rescue Ranch, a sanctuary named in honor of Warren’s beloved late pets, Mouse and Buttwings, Wilbur would find hospitality and care.
Upon meeting Wilbur, Warren’s fondness was evident. While she good-naturedly pondered what could have led him to wander the busy Hollywood streets, she was also excited about his new life at the ranch. Though he originally bore the name of E.B. White’s endearing barnyard companion, Warren entertained the idea of renaming him to echo his Hollywood roots, ensuring his legacy seamlessly weds to his new community.
Zwilling succinctly described Wilbur’s promising future, forecasting a life of bliss amid gourmet meals and a nurturing environment, “It’s a wonderful home,” she said.
Wilbur’s fascinating venture began with uncertainty but transformed into a narrative of rescue, proving that serendipity favors the bold. In trading the frenetic hustle of city pavements for the bucolic fields of Malibu, Wilbur embodies new beginnings.
While Diane Warren’s track record at the Oscars may include notable near-misses, Wilbur stands as a testament to her wins off the screen. Her dedication is part of a larger commitment toward animal advocacy, veganism, and humanitarian support through the Diane Warren Foundation. As for Wilbur, his story underscores the importance of providing safe havens for every creature, illustrating that every being deserves their version of a Malibu dream.
