Seal exploring house

Imagine returning home and being greeted not by the usual sights and sounds of your loving household, but instead by a young fur seal making itself comfortable in the hallway. This unexpected scene unfolded for the Ross family in Mt Maunganui, New Zealand, as their home became the stage for a very unexpected adventure.

The unusual visitor happened to be a curious seal that ventured far from the oceanic expanse to find a rather novel shelter. This interlude featured all the elements: a bewildered cat, the thrill of the kids, and a seal surprisingly at ease with its curious escapade.

Seal in hallway

This daring seal gained entry through not one, but two cat flaps, startling the resident cat, Coco, and inadvertently initiating a game of chase. Jenn Ross stumbled upon what she described as “a cute little seal” joyfully darting through her hallway, seemingly unperturbed by the atypical surroundings.

Thrilled yet amused by the occurrence, Ross woke her children to witness their unexpected guest, thus transforming an ordinary day into a memorable family anecdote. The seal, later dubbed Oscar, exhibited no rush to leave, spending more than two hours interacting with his newfound environment.

Oscar Makes Himself at Home

Nicknamed Oscar by the family, the young seal wandered through the house as though it were an aquatic playground, venturing onto the couch and inspecting the spare room, all while keeping a curious and inquisitive demeanor.

For Oscar, accustomed to the expansive ocean and rugged coastlines, this cozy abode must have seemed an entirely novel world. However, his persistent curiosity outweighed any initial hesitation.

Meanwhile, Coco, clearly unimpressed by the uninvited guest, sought refuge at a neighbor’s house. Her initial shock was understandable, as her personal cat flap had unexpectedly become an entrance for a seal.

Eventually, Oscar’s secret house tour came to an end. With the help of New Zealand’s Department of Conservation, the little explorer was safely guided back outside, ready to resume his life by the sea.

Seal leaving

Rangers revealed that during certain times of the year, curious young seals occasionally venture into unexpected locales, drawn by their instincts to explore. Oscar’s visit was a testament to this, leaving the family with a delightful story and their cat with a warier approach to her flap.

For Oscar, this accidental diversion granted him a brief glimpse into domestic life and a story of wonder shared across both land and sea.
