Five years ago, a stray dog named Caramel found himself outside a gym with no notion that his luck was about to turn. A compassionate man named Vladimir noticed the lonely pup and decided to take him home, offering safety and companionship. Initially, Caramel seemed like any other rescued dog, adapting to a new environment with cautious enthusiasm. However, over the weeks that followed, Vladimir noticed something extraordinary—Caramel’s skin began loosening, forming soft folds that became more pronounced with time.

Vladimir shared in a TikTok video, “His skin started to sag and get really flabby.” The unusual transformation of Caramel’s appearance intrigued both Vladimir and veterinary professionals. But despite numerous vet visits, an explanation for Caramel’s unique condition remained elusive until he received a rare diagnosis.
A Rare Diagnosis
Caramel was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder that affects both humans and animals. In Caramel’s case, the syndrome impacted his collagen, resulting in the distinctive loose, stretchy skin.
“The best way to describe it is that his collagen doesn’t work properly,” Vladimir explained. “It basically doesn’t keep his skin close to his body.”
Understanding Caramel’s condition was a breakthrough. This genetic disorder is sometimes called cutaneous asthenia in dogs, leading to fragile skin that can easily tear or bruise. The severity varies, and treatment involves safeguarding the skin rather than curing the collagen defect.

Vladimir now takes extra precautions, such as avoiding collars or clothes that may irritate Caramel’s sensitive skin. Importantly, Caramel remains free of pain, allowing him to lead a life brimming with joy—be it running, walking, or snuggling beside Vladimir.
Embracing Caramel’s Uniqueness
Some suggested surgery to remove Caramel’s excess skin, but because the condition is linked to his connective tissues, surgery would not solve the underlying problem. Vladimir cherishes Caramel’s unique appearance, considering it a testament to his one-of-a-kind personality.
“His skin seeps into all sides of the couch and leaves us with, like, two inches of sitting room,”
Vladimir humorously noted in a TikTok post.
Despite requiring extra couch space, Caramel’s charm has reached beyond Vladimir’s home. Through TikTok, Caramel’s story has resonated with thousands, particularly those who also live with EDS. For viewers, seeing an animal living happily with a similar condition strengthens their connection to Caramel.

Caramel’s story serves as a reminder that beauty and joy aren’t defined by appearances. Behind those folds lies a happy pup whose life was transformed by Vladimir’s love and willingness to embrace his differences. Caramel truly embodies the beauty of acceptance and the joy of a second chance at life.
