Photographer Helps Shelter Dog Find Home After 1,900 Days
For more than five years, a charming little dog named Scraggles has been witnessing new faces come and go at the Abandoned Pet Rescue in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Arriving at the shelter in 2021 as a hopeful young dog, Scraggles has since turned seven, patiently waiting over 1,900 days to find a forever home. Despite the long wait, Scraggles never lost his cheerful spirit, especially when there’s a tennis ball in play.
Scraggles is famously known at the shelter as a fetch fanatic. With a backflip-style midair catch that’s become his signature, he delights in chasing down tennis balls. Whether enjoying a volley of fetch or rolling in the grass for belly rubs, Scraggles lights up with every bit of attention he receives. Now, a special photography project is bringing new hope for this playful pooch. Perhaps the right family hasn’t seen him yet.
Scraggles’ Journey at the Shelter
Arriving on June 8, 2021, Scraggles joined the ranks of animals hopeful for adoption at Abandoned Pet Rescue. As time passed, days turned into months, and then years—Scraggles becoming one of the shelter’s “365+ Club” members. These are the animals who wait over a year to meet their forever families. Scraggles continues to wait, having surpassed the five-year mark at the shelter.
Despite his extended stay, it’s clear Scraggles would be a joy to bring home. He’s house-trained, masters walking on a leash, and pairs his athletic side perfectly with moments of calm and snuggles.
Photography Brings a New Spotlight
After years of waiting, Scraggles had a chance to shine before the camera, as part of a project designed to draw attention to long-term shelter animals. Pet photographer Adam Goldberg of AGoldPhoto collaborated with Herzen of Xpawsures and Clear the Shelters to capture animals’ personalities behind the kennel doors at Abandoned Pet Rescue.
Their goal? To give pets like Scraggles a better chance at finding a home by revealing the exuberant life behind his cage door.
The series captures Scraggles doing what he loves, providing potential adopters with a glimpse of his playful nature, his budding grey hairs notwithstanding.
The Joy of Fetch
Potential adopters of Scraggles should probably carry a tennis ball with them, as it’s his all-time favorite pastime. The Abandoned Pet Rescue describes him as possibly the “tennis ball fetch champion of the world,” thanks to his acrobatics and impeccable midair catches.
After a session of energetic play, Scraggles is known to peacefully snuggle with his stuffed toys, showcasing his ability to balance activity with relaxation.
Finding the Perfect Home
An ideal setting for Scraggles would likely exclude other pets, as he thrives as the center of attention, although he has a preference for female dogs and might befriend another dog given some time. At 60 pounds, he’s a robust cuddle companion, combining energy with a calming presence.
Scraggles is fully vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. The only thing missing from this equation is the right human companion ready to share their home and heart with him.
While he’s been practicing waiting for more than 1,900 days, perhaps with the help of a few shared photographs, this lovable dog’s wait for a forever family is nearing its end.
