Family of Animals Discovered in Mysterious Box Outside Apartment
Late last month, an unsuspecting volunteer animal rescuer in eastern North Carolina found an unexpected surprise waiting at the end of her driveway. What she initially thought was a regular delivery from retailers like Walmart or Amazon turned out to be something entirely different. Instead of a cardboard package, a grocery basket sat there, taped with a note and a bottle of water resting on top. Her heart picked up pace as she cautiously approached the mysterious package.
Stunned and fearful of what she would uncover, the rescuer peered inside the basket, as described by Shelley Mayfield, the cat team liaison from RescueConnect, to The Dodo. Inside the basket were several frightened cats, their eyes meeting hers, panting under the oppressive heat.
The note left with the basket read, “Found these cuties under my new place.” Overwhelmed already with rescued animals at her home, the woman quickly reached out to Mayfield for assistance. She wasted no time relocating the basket into her car and drove briskly to Mayfield’s residence, seeking further help.
An Unexpected Journey for Rescue
However, the journey took an alarming turn when halfway to her destination, the rescuer noticed the mama cat attempting to escape through a hole in the basket. Alarmed, she glanced in her rearview mirror and caught sight of two kittens trailing their mother. On arriving at Mayfield’s garage, the rescue team carefully retrieved the mama cat and embarked on the task of locating her three kittens. They examined the felines for injuries, nourished them, and started to formulate a plan for their future well-being.
A New Chapter for Maxie and Her Family
Today, the mama cat, affectionately named Maxie, enjoys care and refuge at a cat café in Alexandria, Virginia. As she prepares for her upcoming spay surgery, Maxie anticipates finding her forever home. Meanwhile, her adorable kittens, receiving care at The Sound Cat Veterinary Hospital, will soon be ready for adoption by late September, inviting new families to welcome them joyfully.

Despite their unsettling beginning, Maxie and her kittens can now look forward to a safe and caring future. Their miraculous survival and eventual rescue highlight the indomitable spirit of animals and the unwavering dedication of animal rescuers committed to offering second chances.
