Animals Rescued From Alabama Trailer Experience Outdoors for First Time
When Laurie Hood, the president and founder of Alaqua Animal Refuge, received an urgent call from an animal advocate in Alabama, she was informed that she and her team were the last hope for a group of animals in distress. On the other end of the call, the advocate detailed a heart-wrenching situation: a woman was living in a cramped 22-foot trailer with 36 animals — 12 dogs and 24 cats. The animals had never experienced the freedom of the outdoors, and the cats were confined to a single bathroom. Although the woman cared deeply for these animals, the living conditions had become unmanageable.
Every rescue organization in the vicinity had been contacted, yet none were in a position to assist. Subsequently, when the advocate reached out to Laurie Hood, it was with a mere sliver of hope. Fortunately, Hood and her team at Alaqua Animal Refuge answered the call.
The Rescue Mission
The Alaqua team embarked on their journey early in the morning, traveling from Florida to Alabama. Their hearts were heavy with concern about the state in which they might find the animals. However, upon their arrival and witnessing the initial extraction of the scared yet compliant dogs and cats, a wave of optimism washed over them.
“They did not growl or resist the leads,” Hood recounted to The Dodo. “They simply looked frightened. At that moment, we realized the mission had shifted: We were going to have the opportunity to give these animals a second chance … A day we had been dreading became a day when we knew we could save lives.”
The Rescue Effort
The conditions inside the trailer were overwhelming, but the rescuers were grateful to be able to provide immediate aid. They transported all 36 animals back to the refuge, offering them the chance for a new beginning.
Beginning the Healing Process
Back at the refuge, the animals began medical treatments immediately. While many face a long road to recovery, Hood and her team are dedicated to ensuring that each animal receives comprehensive care.

While the process of recovery continues, the dogs and cats are being introduced to a new world. For the first time, the dogs are experiencing outdoor sights and smells, learning what grass feels like beneath their paws. The cats revel in newfound spaces where they can move freely and relax at their own pace. This newfound freedom is a testament to the refuge’s commitment.
